New York is the city that never sleeps, and with so many events and activities each week across all five boroughs, it can be hard to know what’s actually worthwhile. Here are the events New York City actors should have on their radars this week.
Don’t throw away this shot.
BroadwayCon, the can’t-miss event for theater-lovers and performers alike, is back in New York this weekend—and it’s not too late to get tickets. As in year’s past, the three-day convention will include informative panels such as “To BFA or Not to BFA,” “The Daily Life of a Child on Broadway,” and “Careers in Entertainment: Producers,” as well as one of a kind opportunities like a “Mean Girls” theater dance workshop, and song interpretation sessions with one of Broadway’s leading music directors. This, and the opportunity to rub elbows with industry veterans of onstage and off—you don’t want to miss it. (And if you do attend, make sure to drop by the Backstage booth to say hello!) (Day passes start at $125)
A leading man takes center stage.
TodayTix, the ticket-buying app, is breaking into the live performance realm itself with TodayTix Presents Concerts—and they’re starting with style. Join “Anastasia” star Derek Klena at the historic Café Carlyle on Jan. 15, as he performs the songs that have influenced him throughout his career. Audiences can expect a special guest or two to drop by, as well. (Tickets start at $89)
Kiss her, Kelli.
Before she heads back to Broadway next month in “Kiss Me, Kate,” spend an intimate evening with Tony winner Kelli O’Hara, when she sits down with Seth Rudetsky at the Town Hall. The Jan. 14 event will see O’Hara share stories from her illustrious career, as well as perform a few of the signature songs that have carried her through it. (Tickets start at $52)
It’s just (dramatized) locker room talk.
For one night only, Joe’s Pub will present “The P***y Grabber Plays,” seven short pieces about the women who have accused Donald Trump of sexual harassment. Written based on interviews with the women themselves, each 10-minute play is written and directed by different women, and will ideally go on to be performed regionally and in colleges between now and the 2020 election. The Jan. 14 event will notably feature Tasha Dixon, an actor and former Miss Arizona who’s spoken about Trump’s pageant abuse, playing herself. (Tickets start at $100)
A high school reunion you’ll actually want to witness.
The Jimmy Awards (AKA the high school Tonys) is celebrating its 10th anniversary in New York—but no matter where you are, you have a chance to celebrate. On Jan. 14, the Jimmys will host its first-ever reunion at the National Geographic Center, featuring past participants (including 2018 Jimmys winner and upcoming “Dear Evan Hansen” title star Andrew Barth Feldman), appearances by Broadway stars including Patti Murin, and performances from alumni who have gone on to perform on Broadway and across the country. Best of all, the entire evening will be live-streamed right here, so you can catch all the action right from your bedroom. (Free)
