Welcome to Rumorville! Here you can learn about casting news that’s about to break in Hollywood. These speculations might be only rumors, but that doesn’t mean you can’t follow the trail all the way to the audition room.

The Stephen Sondheim and James Goldman musical “Follies” could soon see its beautiful girls head to the small screen. Earlier this week news broke that Heydey Films is attempting to create a feature adaptation of the musical.

A “Follies” Movie Adaptation is in “Active Development.”

Here they come, those beautiful girls! Following the passing of theatre legend Stephen Sondheim, and what looks to be early stellar reviews of the Steven Spielberg-helmed remake of his “West Side Story,” another Sondheim musical may soon be getting the silver screen treatment. In a feature from The New York Times, it was confirmed that Heyday Films has put into “active development” a feature adaptation of Sondheim and James Goldman’s “Follies.” The musical takes place during a reunion of the Weismann Follies, where “two couples remember their past and face the harsher realities of the present, [and] reminiscing of their younger selves and the years gone by, the crumbling theater brings back memories for both couples of good times and bad.” We have previously reported on the news of another “Follies” film in development in 2019 when Dominic Cooke, who helmed the most recent National Theatre production of the hit musical, Heyday, and BBC Films bought the film rights to develop the project; rumor has it, though, that Cooke is no longer attached to the project and that another director will helm the project. In addition to “West Side Story,” “Follies” would join another Sondheim film currently in development or production following “Merrily We Roll Along,” starring Beanie Feldstein, Ben Platt, and Blake Jenner, which will be directed by Richard Linklater and film over the next 20 years.
