“The Rose”
Cynthia Erivo will take on a role made famous by another stage and screen great. Erivo will star in a remake of “The Rose” at Searchlight. The original, made in 1979, was a musical romantic drama that starred Bette Midler “as a self-destructive rock star who struggles to deal with the constant pressures of her career and the demands of those around her.” The remake, according to Deadline, will update through a contemporary lens on the high price of fame while still paying homage to the original. Searchlight is now hunting for a writer for the project. No further casting has been announced.
“Atlas”
Jennifer Lopez has added another project to her slate and is set to star in the Netflix sci-fi thriller “Atlas.” The film is part of Lopez’s Nuyorican Productions’ creative partnership with the streamer. “Rampage” helmer Brad Peyton will direct from a most recent draft by Aron Eli Coleite. The film follows the titular Atlas, “a woman fighting for humanity in a future where an AI soldier has determined the only way to end war is to end humanity… and to outthink this rogue AI, Atlas must work with the one thing she fears most—another AI.” Also part of Lopez’s deal are “The Mother,” directed by Niki Carro, and “The Cipher,” based on the novel by Isabella Maldonado.
“Throw It Back”
Paul Feig and Tiffany Haddish will produce “Throw It Back” with Haddish set to take a supporting role. “Us” and “The Lion King” actor Shahadi Wright Joseph, who will play a high school senior who gets a shot to stand out after a controversial superstar Miami rapper decides to feature the renowned dance team from her high school in his latest music video. Shadae Lamar Smith, who previously served as the resident music video director for Will.i.am, will make his feature directorial debut. Smith and 2021 Film Independent Screenwriting Fellow Rochée Jeffrey (“Woke”) wrote the screenplay with Feig, Laura Fischer, Rochée Jeffrey, Haddish, Melanie Clark are producing.
“The Toxic Avenger”
First reported by Deadline, Julia Davis, Elijah Wood, Taylour Paige, and Kevin Bacon are the latest to join the upcoming “The Toxic Avenger” movie, starring opposite Peter Dinklage and Jacob Tremblay. As we previously reported, the upcoming Legendary reimagining of the 1984 low-budget action-comedy will follow “a struggling everyman [who] is pushed into a vat of toxic waste [and] is transformed into a mutant freak who must go from shunned outcast to underdog hero as he races to save his son, his friends, and his community from the forces of corruption and greed.” Macon Blair is on board to write and direct. Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz will serve as producers.
“The Watcher”
All eyes on Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan’s new limited series “The Watcher,” which has set Naomi Watts and Bobby Cannavale as its leads. The upcoming Netflix series will reportedly follow a married couple whose move into their dream home is being threatened by terrifying letters from a stalker, signed “The Watcher.” Watts and Cannavale have another project coming down the pipeline, the upcoming film “Once Upon a Time in Staten Island.” This will also be the fourth project Murphy and Brennan have co-created (“The Politician,” “Hollywood,” “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer story,” and now, “The Watcher”), but Brennan has served as writer-executive producer on all of Murphy’s Netflix series to date. The pair have used several different casting teams for these projects, including Ulrich/Dawson/Kritzer, Alexa Fogel.
