“Batwoman”
The cape and cowl have been passed: Javicia Leslie is the new Batwoman! Reported last week, the “God Friended Me” star will succeed Ruby Rose as the titular character in the CW, Warner Bros. Television, and Berlanti Productions series. Leslie will not take over the original role of Kate Kane but instead will star as a new character, Ryan Wilder, who is described as “likable, messy, a little goofy, and untamed.” “Batwoman” will return to The CW for its second season in January. Berlanti casting regulars Lyndsey Baldasare and David Rapaport will continue to cast the series for its second and any subsequent seasons.
“Peter Pan & Wendy”
The next Disney live-action movie has found its villain. Jude Law will reportedly play the iconic Captain Hook in the studio’s upcoming “Peter Pan & Wendy.” Law joins the already announced Ever Anderson and Alexander Molony as Wendy and Peter Pan, respectively. David Lowery (“Pete’s Dragon”) is also officially on board to direct the project after co-writing the script with Toby Halbrooks. According to Variety’s sources, the new film is intended for a theatrical release as opposed to Disney+ streaming, pandemic pending. Debra Zane and Dylan Jury are the casting directors.
“Scenes From a Marriage”
Michelle Williams and Oscar Isaac will help audiences take a closer look at married life in the upcoming HBO limited series “Scenes From a Marriage.” An adaptation of the original 1973 Ingmar Bergman Swedish miniseries of the same name, the series adaptation, written and directed by Hagai Levi (“Our Boys,” “The Affair”), “re-examines the show’s iconic depiction of love, hatred, desire, monogamy, marriage, and divorce through the lens of a contemporary American couple.” This will be Hagai’s third series at HBO, after “Our Boys” and “In Treatment.” No casting director has been announced, but Hagai most recently worked with Hila Yuval for last year’s “Our Boys.”
“Snow Blind”
Jake Gyllenhaal will head back into the world of comics and graphic novels for his next project. After a competitive bidding war, Apple Studios has acquired “Snow Blind,” a thriller adaptation of the graphic novel by Ollie Masters and Tyler Jenkins. Gyllenhaal will star in the project with Gustav Möller making his English-language directing debut at the helm. Patrick Ness will write the story’s script, which will follow a high school student whose life in suburban Alaska gets turned upside down after he innocently posts a photo of his dad online, only to learn he and his family are in the Witness Protection Program. No further casting information has been announced.
“Star Wars: The Bad Batch”
The “Star Wars” universe continues to expand over at Disney+, where, on Monday morning, it was announced a new animated series is in the works. “Star Wars: The Bad Batch” has officially been given the green light, taking the torch from the recently concluded “Star Wars: The Clone Wars.” Dave Filoni (“The Clone Wars,” “The Mandalorian”) is set to return as the executive producer with Athena Portillo, Brad Rau, Jennifer Corbett, and more. The series will follow the elite and experimental clones of the Bad Batch, who were first introduced in The Clone Wars, as they find their way in a rapidly changing galaxy. The series is scheduled to premiere in 2021.
“Bullet Train”
Following his Oscar-winning performance in Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” Brad Pitt has found his next starring vehicle. The actor is set to star in the Sony Pictures action film “Bullet Train,” directed by “Deadpool 2” helmer David Leitch. Based on the Japanese novel “Maria Beetle” by Kotaro Isaka and scripted by Zak Olkewicz, the story follows five assassins who find themselves on a fast-moving bullet train from Tokyo to Morioka with only a few stops in between. Pitt has been in talks for several projects this year, but this is so far his only official commitment. Production is eyeing a start date for later this year. Leitch always works with casting directors Mary Vernieu and Marisol Roncali—expect him to continue that streak with “Bullet Train.”
“Swagger”
Oscar nominee Quvenzhané Wallis (“Annie,” “Beasts of the Southern Wild”) will head from the silver screen to the small screen with her next big role. The young actor is now set as a lead alongside O’Shea Jackson Jr. in the Apple basketball-themed drama “Swagger.” Wallis will play Crystal, a top basketball player in the project, which comes from NBA superstar Kevin Durant and his Thirty Five Ventures, as well as Reggie Rock Blythewood, who will write and direct. Lauren Grey is the series casting director and the project has already sought actors through Backstage—be sure to keep an eye out for any future calls!
