“Knives Out”
Detective Benoit Blanc is back on the case for the second installment of “Knives Out,” and last week, four possible suspects were named. Janelle Monáe, Edward Norton, Dave Bautista, and Kathryn Hahn have all reportedly joined the cast of the sequel to the hit Rian Johnson murder mystery comedy. As we previously reported, Daniel Craig will reprise his role as Blanc for the second film, which will once again be helmed and written by Johnson. Plot details are being kept tightly under wraps, but filming is expected to start soon in Greece and the film will be released on Netflix. Mary Vernieu was the casting director for the first film and is likely returning for the follow-ups. Learn more about how she cast “Knives Out” here.

“Bitter Root”
Hot off her acclaimed directing debut of “One Night In Miami,” Regina King and Legendary have closed a deal for the multihyphenate to direct and produce the feature adaptation of “Bitter Root,” the acclaimed Image Comics series. Set during the Harlem Renaissance, the story follows a family of once-great monster hunters that faces an unimaginable evil that descends upon New York City. King will also produce with Regina King via their Royal Ties banner, alongside Ryan Coogler, Zinzi Coogler, and Sev Ohanian of Proximity Media. Bryan Edward Hill is currently rewriting the draft. No casting or casting team has been announced at this time, but keep an eye on “One Night in Miami” CD Kimberly Hardin and read more about how she cast the award-winning film here at Backstage!

“Bodies, Bodies, Bodies”
First reported by Deadline, A24 has added Lee Pace, Rachel Sennott, Chase Sui Wonders, and Conner O’Malley to the cast of its upcoming slasher film “Bodies, Bodies, Bodies.” The studio had no comment at this time, but if accurate, the actors will join Amandla Stenberg, Maria Bakalova, Pete Davidson, and Myha’la Herrold in the secret slash film. Halina Reijn is set to direct. Production is set to begin this week.

“The Premonition: A Pandemic Story”
Phil Lord and Chris Miller are set to direct the film adaptation of “The Premonition: A Pandemic Story,” based on the New York Times new bestseller by Michael Lewis. The book, “The Premonition,” tells about “the early days of COVID-19 and those U.S. heroes who tried to warn against the dangers of underestimating the deadly seriousness of the killer virus.” Universal Pictures has optioned the screen rights on the tails of its release. Lord and Miller will also produce under their Lord Miller banner, along with Aditya Sood, and Amy Pascal will also produce for Pascal Pictures with Rachel O’Connor. This is the second new adaptation of a best-selling novel that Lord and Miller have committed to recently, following “Project Hail Mary,” which also debuted last week. No casting has been announced at this time.

“Shining Girls”
Jamie Bell will reportedly join Elisabeth Moss and Wagner Moura in the new Apple TV+ metaphysical thriller “Shining Girls.” Based on the 2013 best-selling novel by Lauren Beukes and adapted for television by Silka Luisa, who also serves as showrunner, the story follows a Chicago reporter (played by Moss) who survived a brutal assault only to find her reality shifting as she hunts down her attacker. Moura will play a veteran journalist breaking the widening story of a copycat attack and Bell will play the role of a mysterious loner with a surprising connection to Moss’s character. In addition to starring, Moss executive produces through Love & Squalor Pictures, alongside Lindsey McManus, and Leonardo DiCaprio serves as executive producer through Appian Way alongside Jennifer Davisson.
