“The First Lady”
There’s a new face in the White House: Michelle Pfeiffer. The Oscar and Emmy nominee is set to portray Betty Ford in the upcoming “The First Lady,” a Showtime anthology series set in the East Wing of the White House, pulling back the curtain on the personal and political lives of America’s First Ladies. Season 1 will be focused on Betty Ford, Michelle Obama, and Eleanor Roosevelt with Pfeiffer playing Ford and joining the already announced Viola Davis as Michelle Obama; the role of Eleanor Roosevelt has not yet been cast. Susanne Bier (“The Undoing”) will direct and executive produce the series, which will be co-executive produced by Davis. A casting director has yet to be made public, but Bier most recently worked with Ellen Chenoweth and Jina Jay for the hit HBO series.

“The Formula”
One of the first directors for a Netflix original feature, Gerard McMurray is making his way home again. The “Burning Sands” director will helm “The Formula” for the streamer with John Boyega and Robert De Niro attached to star. McMurray will write, direct, and produce the film via his Buppie Productions with Jane Rosenthal, De Niro, and Berry Welsh also producing. “The Formula” will follow a Formula One racing prodigy who is forced to become a getaway driver to save the only family he has left. No further casting or casting team has been announced.

“Lessons in Chemistry”
Brie Larson will go back to school with the upcoming Apple TV+ series “Lessons in Chemistry.” The “Captain Marvel” star will headline and executive produce the drama from “Unbelievable” co-creator and “Erin Brockovich” writer Susannah Grant. Jason Bateman and Michael Costigan will also executive produce under their Aggregate Films banner. Based on the upcoming debut novel from author and science editor Bonnie Garmus, “Lessons in Chemistry” follows Elizabeth Zott, whose dream of being a scientist is put on hold in a society deeming that women belong in the domestic sphere until she accepts a job as a host on a TV cooking show. No further casting or production timeline has been announced.

“She-Hulk”
Ginger Gonzaga is smashing into the action at Disney+, where the “Kidding” star is set to co-star opposite Tatiana Maslany in the “She-Hulk” Marvel series. The comedy will center on the eponymous heroine (Maslany), aka Jennifer Walters, an attorney who has similar powers to her cousin, Bruce Banner/The Hulk. First reported by Deadline, Gonzaga will play Waters’ best friend, and she recently shared her excitement on Twitter in reaction to the news. Mark Ruffalo will reprise his role as The Hulk, and Tim Roth is reprising his Hulk character of The Abomination for the series. Kat Coiro and Anu Valia will direct with Jessica Gao serving as head writer. Veteran Marvel CD Sarah Finn is the casting director.

“The Witcher: Blood Origin”
Reported on Monday morning, “Queen & Slim” star Jodie Turner-Smith has been tapped as a lead in Netflix’s upcoming six-part, live-action series “The Witcher: Blood Origin,” a prequel to its parent series “The Witcher.” Turner-Smith will reportedly play Éile, “an elite warrior blessed with the voice of a goddess who has left her clan and position as Queen’s guardian to follow her heart as a nomadic musician.” This marks a return to Netflix for the actor, who starred in the streamer’s “Nightflyers” series. Set in an elven world 1,200 years before the world of “The Witcher,” “Blood Origin” will tell the story of the creation of the first prototype Witcher. Declan de Barra serves as executive producer and showrunner of series with Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, creator of parent series, executive producing. Sophie Holland is the casting director for the parent series. Learn how she casts talent for the series here at Backstage!
