Two major projects announced casting news earlier this week and we’ve got the inside scoop. From Disney+’s new adventure series “Nautilus” to Ben Stiller’s upcoming feature adaptation of the 1960s spy series “The Champions,” here’s what’s been given the go-ahead this week when it comes to casting and production!
Shazad Latif will star in the new adventure series “Nautilus” on Disney+.
Disney is going back under the sea—just not with the property that came to mind. Disney+ has hired Daniel Harlan Jacobson (“Star Trek: Discovery”) to play Captain Nemo in its upcoming live-action adventure series “Nautilus,” inspired by Jules Verne’s “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.” Deadline reports that the 10-part epic will Tell “the never before told origin story of Jules Verne’s most iconic character, Captain Nemo…the enigmatic Indian prince who steals a fantastical submarine from the East India Company and sets sail in search of adventure under the sea…and his legendary submarine, The Nautilus.” Michael Matthews (“Love and Monsters”) will helm the project, which is set to begin production in December in Australia.
Ben Stiller has found his co-champion for his new film.
According to Variety, Ben Stiller is bringing Cate Blanchett on board for his upcoming feature adaptation of the 1960s spy series “The Champions.” Stiller will both star and helm the project, as well as produce via his Red Hour Productions label. Blanchett will star and produce through her Dirty Films banner. The film will follow “three United Nations agents whose plane crashes into the Himalayas. Upon being rescued by an advanced civilization secretly living in Tibet, they are granted enhanced intellectual and physical abilities. When the agents return to the outside world, they use their new superhuman abilities to become champions of law, order, and justice,” via Deadline. Upon her casting, Blanchett said, “I’ve long wanted to work with Ben— the director and the actor. He is one of the most engaged and versatile directors working today. Anyone who can make both ‘Zoolander’ and ‘Escape at Dannemora’ is a creative force to be reckoned with.” New Republic Pictures and ITV America are the studios behind the new film. No further casting has been announced.
