“The Sandman”
The long-awaited, highly-anticipated Netflix adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s popular comic book series “The Sandman” has begun to move forward with some major names in front of the camera. Announced last week, Tom Sturridge, Gwendoline Christie, Vivienne Acheampong, Boyd Holbrook, Charles Dance, Asim Chaudhry, and Sanjeev Bhaskar have been set to star in the dark fantasy series based on the DC comics. The series follows “the people and places affected by Morpheus, the Dream King, as he tries to fix all the cosmic and human mistakes he’s made during his vast existence.” Allan Heinberg (“Wonder Woman,” “Grey’s Anatomy”) will serve as showrunner, executive producing alongside Gaiman and David S. Goyer. The three are also co-writing the project. “The Sandman” has been in the works for a while—originally as a feature film directed by and starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who stepped down after creative differences. The first episode of the series is set to be released at some point in 2021. Lucinda Syson is the casting director.

“Borderlands”
Kevin Hart will head to the “Borderlands” for his next big role. The actor will (unexpectedly) play Roland, an ex-soldier-turned-mercenary in the video game adaptation, opposite Cate Blanchett, who will play Lilith, a siren with magical powers. Eli Roth (“The House With a Clock in its Walls,” “Death Wish”) is directing the adaptation. Said Roth, “I’m thrilled to be working with Kevin. ‘Borderlands’ is a different kind of role for him, and we are excited to thrill audiences with a side of Kevin they’ve never seen before.” Based on the role-playing shooter game of the same name that launched in 2009, it’s unknown if the film adaptation will focus only on the first game or cover its sequels. Craig Mazin (“Chernobyl”) wrote the latest draft of the screenplay. No production timeline or release date has been set.

“Am I Ok?”
Dakota Johnson, Sonoya Mizuno, and more are among the actors joining the upcoming “Am I Ok?” from co-directors Tig Notaro and Stephanie Allynne. Johnson and Mizuno will co-star alongside Jermaine Fowler, Whitmer Thomas, Molly Gordon, June Diane Raphael, Notaro, and Sean Hayes. The film will follow lifelong best friends Lucy and Jane, who are convinced they know everything there is to know about each other, but when Jane announces she’s moving from Los Angeles to London for a job, Lucy reveals a deeply buried, long-held secret. Lauren Pomerantz wrote the script. Filming starts today, Feb. 1, in L.A. Chelsea Ellis Bloch and Marisol Roncali of Atomic Honey Casting are the casting directors.

“Scenes From a Marriage”
Nicole Beharie, Corey Stoll, and Tovah Feldshuh are the latest to join the supporting cast of HBO’s “Scenes from a Marriage.” As we previously reported, Jessica Chastain and Oscar Isaac will star in the limited series adaptation of Ingmar Bergman’s classic film, updated to re-examine “love, hatred, desire, monogamy, marriage, and divorce through the lens of a contemporary American couple.” Hagai Levi (“Our Boys,” “The Affair”) will write and direct. The series will also feature Sunita Mani in a supporting role. Douglas Aibel is the casting director.

“Tomb Raider”
First reported by Deadline, “Lovecraft Country” creator-director-executive producer Misha Green will write and make her feature directorial debut in the next “Tomb Raider” for MGM. Alicia Vikander is set to reprise her role as the titular Croft, first making her turn as the character in 2018’s “Tomb Raider.” The sequel will be released theatrically in the U.S., date TBD. No further casting has been announced. Susie Figgis cast the first film.

“The Nevers”
Following original showrunner and creator Joss Whedon’s sudden departure, Philippa Goslett (“Mary Magdalene” and” How To Talk To Girls At Parties”) is taking over the reins as showrunner on the upcoming HBO sci-fi drama “The Nevers.” This will be Goslett’s first major television gig despite having previously developed projects for FX, the BBC, and Channel 4. Co-written by Whedon with Jane Espenson and Doug Petrie, the drama will follow a gang of Victorian women with “unusual abilities, relentless enemies, and a mission that might change the world.” “The Nevers” was supposed to be the first TV series for Whedon since “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” and the first he solely created since 2009’s “Dollhouse,” but he exited the project in November, stating the challenges of making the series was more than he could handle “without the work beginning to suffer.” “The Nevers” stars Laura Donnelly, Olivia Williams, James Norton, Tom Riley, Ann Skelly, Ben Chaplin, Pip Torrens, Zackary Momoh, Amy Manson, Nick Frost, Rochelle Neil, Eleanor Tomlinson, and Denis O’Hare.
