From Production Assistant training courses to résumé-building services, Beyond Film School prides itself on being a full-service resource for aspiring filmmakers.
Even if you don’t have any background experience, the company offers useful tools to help anyone have a leg up in the film world. Founder Amber M. Sherman, who also started her career without a single contact, knows the importance of putting in the proper work in order to make it in the industry. So, we decided to ask her to share a few secrets of the trade, especially for those who are totally new to the game.
The truth about Film School.
Sherman: As someone who didn’t go to film school, and has worked in this industry for more than a decade I can say a strong “no” to needing Film School. I think that is truly the beauty of the industry. You can work your way from the bottom and make a great living, and career. Even if you might have a goal to become a Director, there are so many successful directors out there that did not go to Film School, such as Quentin Tarantino and Christopher Nolan. I say, why not save hundreds of thousands of dollars, skip Film School and jump right into trying to make it in the industry.

How to start networking if you didn’t go to Film School.
Sherman: The simple answer is to talk to people and connect with people. But when I tell people that the next question that follows is, “who?” The person that has no connections has to put themselves out there. Join film Facebook groups, message people on social media, get on those film job apps, apply to a job post even if you think that you don’t have enough “experience.” Be proactive and get yourself next to people who are making movies, and small projects. Also, don’t forget to take risks, because you never know. Small things can always lead to bigger opportunities.
How can a site like Beyond Film School help aspiring crew and creators?
Sherman: Beyond Film School believes if you truly feel, think, and know you belong in this industry you can make it happen. So, we are here to help and support folks out there trying to follow their dreams. We offer a variety of amazing resources, such as videos, blogs, and career consultation, but it is very much a holistic approach for our users when it comes to using our resources. There are some folks who watch my videos and take their career into their own hands and have success. Some want one-on-one time with me and want to know, based on their specific situation, how to navigate getting into film. One course that is popular and is in-person is our Set PA training course.
Why should someone consider taking Beyond Film School’s Set PA Training Course?
Sherman: The Set PA Training Course started out for two reasons: to give people a chance in this industry, and to also help me staff projects. It’s a two-day training course that is six and a half hours each day. It’s limited to 13 people each class so I can make sure I can give my personal attention to everyone and get to know each of my trainees. After completing the program, you are given access to the Private Facebook Group where I post job opportunities. I also hold monthly Zooms to stay connected to my trainees. I want them to know I support them, and they have a group they can rely on, and they are not alone. I don’t just train them and just leave them out there to navigate the Film World by themselves.
