Nicole Kidman + Jamie Lee Curtis to Star in ‘Kay Scarpetta’ Series Adaptation at Amazon

Oscar winner Nicole Kidman and current Oscar nominee Jamie Lee Curtis are both headed back to television to help adapt Patricia Cornwell’s ”Kay Scarpetta” book series for Amazon.

According to Deadline, Kidman will play the titular Scarpetta, “a brilliant forensic pathologist, inspired by former Virginia Chief Medical Examiner Marcella Farinelli Fierro, who uses forensic technology to solve crimes.” Curtis will play Dorothy, Kay’s sister and the mother of Lucy Farinnelli, a recurring character in the book series.

Kidman will executive produce through her Blossom Films banner, and Curtis through her Comet Pictures banner. Liz Sarnoff (“Barry,” “Deadwood,” “Lost”) will serve as writer and showrunner with Blumhouse Television producing for Amazon Studios. The series is expected to receive an order for two eight-episode seasons, according to Deadline’s sources.

This is the latest of multiple attempts to mount an adaptation of the Scarpetta series, including films at Columbia Pictures and Fox 2000 that had Demi Moore and Angelina Jolie attached, respectively. As Deadline notes, though, Cornwell is notoriously protective of her works. The new TV series comes as a result of Curtis’ first-look deal with Blumhouse. She and Blumhouse Television secured the rights to the 26-book Scarpetta series in 2021.

The series is the latest in a recent string of starring roles on the small screen for Kidman, including “Big Little Lies,” “The Undoing,” “Nine Perfect Strangers,” and “Roar.” Curtis, a rare TV star, is currently nominated for an Oscar in the Supporting Actress category for “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” Her most recent recurring on-camera television role was in “New Girl,” in which she appeared in six episodes over the show’s six-year run.

Amazon’s “Kay Scarpetta” is now in pre-production.
