They once seemed like an unlikely triangle of performers: two elder statesmen of sketch comedy and one Disney kid–turned–pop star. These days, the TV comedy scene wouldn’t feel right without the cozy chemistry shared by the stars of “Only Murders in the Building.”
On Season 5, neighbors and true crime podcasters Charles-Haden Savage (Steve Martin), Oliver Putnam (Martin Short), and Mabel Mora (Selena Gomez) investigate the mysterious death of their longtime doorman, Lester (Teddy Coluca). The clues lead them to a mess of zany suspects, natch.

Each actor has perfected their contribution to the show’s dynamic: Martin’s hapless vanity, Short’s mercurial delusion, Gomez’s dry sarcasm. Their easy camaraderie brings earned warmth to character-building scenes, like grappling with the possibility of losing their homes in the Arconia. Their sparks fly best—and most unpredictably—when they’re in peril, like sneaking around a secret casino or confronting five hulking, possibly mob-affiliated brothers.
Meanwhile, as fussy neighbor Howard Morris, Michael Cyril Creighton executes the writers’ most absurd tendencies through an unhealthy bond to a new robot doorman, L.E.S.T.R. (voiced by Paul Rudd).
Da’Vine Joy Randolph, playing no-nonsense Detective Donna Williams, returns throughout the season to barely keep her composure around the core trio. And has Meryl Streep ever had more fun than playing Loretta Durkin, Oliver’s eccentric actor wife? On this whodunit, the grand dame of American acting affecting a bad Cajun accent to go undercover for a murder investigation is par for the silly course.
