Last year’s brightest film stars will be recognized at the 2023 Academy Awards ceremony, which takes place on Mar. 12—less than two months after the Jan. 24 nominations announcement. Hollywood’s most grandiose event is known for its glitz and glamour; but Oscars night is also a time for industry professionals to recognize those who paved their path to success, champion the causes they hold near and dear, and of course, have the chance to take home a golden statuette.
As always, the nominations list is full of surprises—particularly in the best leading actress category. With a Film Independent Spirit Awards nod but not a peep from major awards bodies like SAG, the Hollywood Foreign Press, or the Critics’ Choice Association, Andrea Riseborough scored a nomination for “To Leslie” over predicted frontrunners Viola Davis (“The Woman King”) and Danielle Deadwyler (“Till”). Ana de Armas, less of an outlier but still on the edge, also jumped into the category for her performance in Marilyn Monroe biopic “Blonde.”
Meanwhile, the best leading actor category is filled top-to-bottom with first-time nominees, including Colin Farrell (“The Banshees of Inisherin”), Austin Butler (“Elvis”), Brendan Fraser (“The Whale”), Paul Mescal (“Aftersun”), and Bill Nighy (“Living”).
“Everything Everywhere All at Once” leads the year with 11 nominations, including best picture, director, original screenplay, and four acting nods: Michelle Yeoh for lead actress, Ke Huy Quan for supporting actor, and Jamie Lee Curtis and Stephanie Hsu for supporting actress. “The Banshees of Inisherin” and “All Quiet on the Western Front” trail right behind with nine nominations apiece.
Here’s the full list of nominees being recognized at the 95th Academy Awards for their outstanding contributions to the film industry.
