New York is the city that never sleeps, and with so many events and activities each week across all five boroughs, it can be hard to know what’s actually worthwhile. Here are the events New York City actors should have on their radars this week.
Emerging artists will fly Under the Radar.
Under the Radar, The Public Theater’s annual festival of new works, returns this week with a milestone to celebrate. The 15th (!) anniversary lineup, which is ongoing through Jan. 13, will again provide a high-profile platform to elevate diverse artists as they “redefine” the act of making theater. Held at The Public, this year’s installment will feature 21 artists from nine countries. (Prices vary based on performance)
Properly kick off awards season.
It’s the most wonderful time of the year! No, not the holidays—it’s awards season, and first up is the Golden Globes, honoring the best in the year’s film and television. You can tune in at home on Jan. 6 of course, but if you want to fully immerse yourself in the festivities, head to Caveat on the Lower East Side for a viewing party. Featuring an in-house drinking game as well as live performances during commercial breaks, the evening will kick off at 7 p.m. with a “red carpet show,” with the broadcast beginning at 8 p.m. (Tickets: $15)
See film costume craft up close.
Speaking of awards season, one of this year’s contenders could be “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs,” the Coen Brothers Western now streaming on Netflix. As designer Mary Zophres told Backstage, the multi-part epic required scrupulous costuming, and through April, you can get an up-close look at her handiwork at the Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria. (Museum admission: $15)
Channel your inner Kerrigan (or Harding).
New York City summers are best-known for rooftops but winter wants in on the sky-high action, and the Rooftop at Pier 17 Winterland is making it happen. Featuring the only rooftop ice skating rink in the city, you can get panoramic views of the city while taking an on-ice spin, as well as warm up with seasonal cocktails and bites. The rink is only open through March, so get there while you can. (Rink admission starts at $10)
Relive Britney’s glory days.
In news that will make you feel very, very, very old: This month marks the 20th anniversary of Britney Spears releasing her icon-making album “...Baby One More Time.” But don’t despair! Rather, celebrate the album and all of Britney’s ensuing hits at The Bell House on Jan. 5 when they hold “Party Like It’s 1999: Britney One More Time Edition.” A DJ will be spinning “Toxic,” “Womanizer,” and other Britney classics all night, with booze and snacks available for purchase. (Free)
