Welcome to Rumorville! Here you can learn about casting news that’s about to break in Hollywood. These speculations might be only rumors, but that doesn’t mean you can’t follow the trail all the way to the audition room.
“Tick, Tick… Boom!”
Earlier this week, Netflix announced it has won the honors to make the film adaptation of Jonathan Larson’s “Tick, Tick… Boom!”, which will serve as a vessel for Lin-Manuel Miranda’s directorial debut. But even more exciting news came with that announcement. According to Variety, Andrew Garfield is currently the top choice to star in the musical film, the autobiographical Jon, a musical theater composer trying to make it big. Garfield is, of course, no stranger to the theater, having won a Tony Award in 2018 for his leading role in Tony Kushner’s “Angels in America,” but this will be the actor’s first major foray into musical theater. No contracts have been signed for the actor yet, but casting is likely coming soon. A casting team hasn’t been made public yet either, but based on Miranda’s past collaborations, Telsey + Company is the likely choice.
“Nightmare Alley”
Guillermo del Toro is readying his next big feature and has likely found his star. Bradley Cooper is reportedly in early talks to star in the Oscar-winning director’s “Nightmare Alley.” Leonardo DiCaprio was originally supposed to star in the project but ended up passing after a deal could not be reached. The film, written by del Toro and Kim Morgan, will begin filming this fall, so the team is obviously looking to tie up the deal with the star quickly. Robin D. Cook will lead the casting team.
“Easy A” Spin-Off
A beloved coming-of-age comedy is reportedly getting a spin-off. Nearly a decade after the success of 2010’s “Easy A,” which helped launch the career of Emma Stone, Screen Gems is reportedly working on a spin-off written and directed by original writer Bert Royal. The film is still in early development with a script still in progress so it will be a while before the project gets off the ground, but if it does, it will mark Royal’s directorial debut. Stone is unlikely to return, as the spinoff will be set at the same high school and explore the same themes as the original but will focus on a new group of students and teachers. Lisa Miller Katz was the casting director for the first film, but since she is no longer working regularly, there will probably be a new CD who will pull together this cast.
