Welcome to Rumorville! Here you can learn about casting news that’s about to break in Hollywood. These speculations might be only rumors, but that doesn’t mean you can’t follow the trail all the way to the audition room.
Wakanda Disney+ Series
Wakanda forever, especially for Ryan Coogler. Under a new multi-year overall television deal with his Proximity Media, the “Black Panther” director and co-writer is reportedly working on a series set in Wakanda at Disney+. No details are known about the project, including who from the film will return and in what form. Coogler is currently working on the sequel to the 2018 blockbuster starring the late Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, and more. Both films and likely the series will be cast by Marvel and Disney casting director Sarah Finn—find out what you need to know to audition for her here at Backstage!
Michael Imperioli-Alec Berg HBO Series
Michael Imperioli will forever be a part of the HBO family, and “Barry” co-creator Alec Berg may be bringing him back in for a reunion. Berg is reportedly developing a scripted series co-written by him and Imperioli with the “Sopranos” actor set to star. According to Variety, the untitled project is described as “a meta blend of fact and fiction loosely based on Imperioli’s experiences as a practicing Buddhist.” Berg, his producing partner Amy Solomon, and Imperioli will executive produce the new series. Berg is currently under an overall deal at HBO with his credits including the aforementioned “Barry,” “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” and “Silicon Valley.” He’s worked with several casting directors on those projects, including “Barry” team Bialy/Thomas and “Silicon Valley” team Abellera/McCarthy.
“The Mother”
First reported by Deadline, Jennifer Lopez has lined up a new Netflix project, and that project may have lined up a director. Lopez will star in “The Mother,” in which she will play a deadly female assassin who comes out of hiding to protect the daughter that she gave up years before, while on the run from dangerous men. According to reports, “Mulan” director Niki Caro is currently in talks to direct the action feature. She has previously helmed “Whale Rider,” “North Country,” “The Zookeeper’s Wife,” among others, and is currently working on “Beautiful Ruins” and the Amazon musical series “Daisy Jones & The Six.” Among the casting directors she’s worked with, the most recent was Debra Zane on the live-action “Mulan.”
