The upcoming stage-to-screen adaptation of “The Color Purple” musical has officially announced its stars. Last week, news broke that Taraji P. Henson, Fantasia Taylor, and Danielle Brooks would be joining the cast of the new Warner Bros. project. Here’s everything we know about this exciting casting announcement.
“The Color Purple” Has Found Its Stars
According to Variety, the upcoming film adaptation of “The Color Purple” musical has cast Taraji P. Henson as Shug Avery, Fantasia Taylor as Celie, and Danielle Brooks as Sofia. The latter pair of actors will reprise their roles from the stage musical; Taylor made her Broadway debut in the original production as a replacement in 2007, and Brooks starred in the 2015 revival, in which she earned a Tony nomination. Brooks learned of her casting during a surprise Zoom call with Oprah Winfrey, who starred in the same role in Steven Spielberg’s original 1985 adaptation. Henson, Taylor, and Brooks join the previously announced cast members Colman Domingo, Corey Hawkins, H.E.R., and Halle Bailey. The Warner Bros. adaptation will be directed by Blitz Bazawule (“The Burial of Kojo,” Beyoncé’s “Black is King’) and adapted for the screen by Marcus Gardley (“The Chi”). Stage and screencasting team The Telsey Office is behind the film’s all-star cast. The film, which is due in 2023, is also seeking background actors and young twins for featured roles.
