Filming is officially underway for the upcoming film adaptation of the musical “The Color Purple.” Starring Taraji P. Henson, Danielle Brooks, Halle Bailey, Fantasia Barrino, Colman Domingo, and more, the project is filming outside of Atalanta right now—specifically in Savannah and Macon, Georgia. For more details about production as well as potential casting opportunities, we’ve got you covered. Here’s everything we know about this new project.
“The Color Purple” Is Now Filming in Savannah and Macon, Georgia
Shug Avery has made it to town at last. Filming is now in full force for the upcoming Warner Bros. and Amblin Entertainment adaptation of the musical “The Color Purple,” which had previously been adapted by the film and book of the same name.
According to 13WMAZ and WJCL 22 in Georgia, both Savannah and Macon have been the home of production, with both cities seeing road closures. In Savannah, the cast and crew filmed around the U.S. Customhouse at Bay and Bull Streets. In Macon, several roads downtown will reportedly be closed through April 11.
As we’ve previously reported, the cast of the upcoming movie musical is filled with big names—with Oscar nominee and “King Richard” star Aunjanue Ellis as the latest star to join. As of now, the project includes Taraji P. Henson, Halle Bailey (who shared a brief video on her Instagram from the set), Fantasia Taylor, Danielle Brooks, Colman Domingo, Corey Hawkins, Louis Gossett Jr., H.E.R., David Alan Grier, Deon Cole, Ciara, Stephen Hill, Tamela J. Mann, Phylicia Pearl Mpasi, Jeffrey Marcus, Emana Rachelle, Terrence J. Smith, and Tiffany Elle Burgess, and more.
The Telsey Office is the casting team behind the project. The Broadway agency also was in charge of putting the cast together for the most recent revival, which starred Cynthia Erivo, Jennifer Hudson, Brooks (who will be reprising her role from the production for the film), and others.
When it comes to casting opportunities, “The Color Purple” has already posted multiple notices with us in the past few weeks. While those have since wrapped up their planned filming days as of this week, it’s very likely we’ll have more while filming continues. So, be sure to keep an eye out on Atlanta-area feature film casting calls for your chance to appear in the film/
“The Burial Of Kojo” and “Black Is King” director Blitz Bazawule is helming the movie musical. He marked the first day of filming two weeks ago via Instagram with a photo of the clapperboard. He even followed it up by sharing a photo on Twitter of when producer and original “The Color Purple” star Oprah Winfrey dropped by the set.
“The Color Purple” is due out in theaters on Dec. 20, 2023.
