“A Strange Loop” is not so strange anymore. The Pulitzer Prize–winning musical by Michael R. Jackson, about a young, gay Black man trying to write his own show, led the 2022 Tony Awards nominations with 11 nods. Tony winner Adrienne Warren and three-time Tony nominee Joshua Henry announced the nominations on Monday morning.

“Paradise Square,” a musical set in the 1800s about an integrated neighborhood in New York City, followed close behind with 10 nominations, tied with “MJ,” the Michael Jackson jukebox musical. The revival of Stephen Sondheim and George Furth’s “Company” received nine nominations, while the season’s other major new musical, “Six,” garnered eight.

In the play category, “The Lehman Trilogy,” the century-spanning tale of the Lehman brothers, earned eight nominations, while the revival of Ntozake Shange’s “For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide/When the Rainbow Is Enuf” received six nods.

Nominations rolled in a week later than originally scheduled. On April 23, the Broadway League announced that nominations would be delayed. COVID-19–related cancellations, the League noted, prevented nominators from seeing shows before the original deadline. This year’s Tonys recognized shows that opened between Feb. 20, 2020, and May 4, 2022.

The scheduling isn’t the only break from tradition. The Tony categories typically include five nominees. But this year, most of the acting categories had six, including lead actor in a play, featured actor in a play, featured actress in a play, and featured actress in a musical.

The nominations also included previously announced Tony Honors for Excellence in the Theatre. These special awards will go to the Asian American Performers Action Coalition (AAPAC); Broadway for All; music copyist Emily Grishman; Feinstein’s/54 Below; and the designers’ union United Scenic Artists, Local USA 829, IATSE.

James C. Nicola, the longtime artistic director of New York Theatre Workshop, who has overseen the premieres of musicals such as “Rent” and “Hadestown,” will also receive a Special Tony Award. Nicola will step down from the position on June 30.

The Tony Awards will take place on June 12 at Radio City Music Hall. Similar to the 2021 Tony Awards, a one-hour awards ceremony will stream on Paramount+, while a three-hour event with performances will debut on CBS. Recent Oscar winner Ariana DeBose, herself a Tony nominee, will host. The Tony Awards are produced by the Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing.
