When he’s not starring in the “Fast and Furious” films, actor-singer Tyrese Gibson is trying his hand at heavier dramas such as Quentin Tarantino’s “Django Unchained.” This nearly seven-minute taped audition shows the actor bringing some weighty delivery to his typically jovial demeanor.
Gibson is completely off book and commits wholeheartedly to the role. It’s an impassioned audition complete with scoring and cinematography. The video is bookended with quotes, and the second reads, “As an actor you should never assume that people know what you’re capable of. We are perception creators so if those perceptions don’t exist, you create them.”
Released in 2012, “Django Unchained” follows a freed slave out to save his wife, played by Kerry Washington. The film also stars Oscar winners Leonardo DiCaprio and Christoph Waltz, and Oscar nominee Samuel L. Jackson. The film landed Tarantino his second Oscar for best screenplay (the first being for “Pulp Fiction”). Though the role eventually went to Oscar winner Jamie Foxx (who also has a music background), watching Gibson give it his all below is a worthy watch all the same.
