Los Angeles-based Grant Crocker has long been drawn to be part of the entertainment industry.

"I wanted to create, to work on projects, and to have my life and experience represented on and off screen," he said, echoing the aspirations of countless creatives. As an early-career actor, screenwriter, content creator, and social media influencer, Crocker has prioritized getting as much experience as he can everywhere he can.

He’s been cast in high-profile projects like a NFL Monday Night Football promo, promotional content for West Shield, even 2023’s blockbuster Barbie. And he’s just getting started.

“I knew I wanted to work in TV and film but had no idea in what capacity,” he recalled. “I wanted to write, act, create. I continued to put myself out there until I landed my first job in background casting.”

Nurturing new beginnings with Backstage

For those just embarking on their journey in the industry, Crocker was adamant about taking advantage of tools like Backstage to get experience in any way possible.

Backstage membership includes unlimited profile media uploads and unlimited submissions, so he said there’s no reason not to be looking for and applying to new jobs every day. “I love the ability to find diverse castings that span an array of creative fields. From reality, scripted, commercial, music videos... Backstage has it all.”

Crocker has used Backstage as an actor to book numerous jobs for himself and as a casting director to book hundreds of actors, witnessing firsthand the platform's ability to open doors across various creative fields.

"Complete that profile, use search filters and save searches, and include cover letters," he advised, because it’s the small yet crucial steps that pave the way for success. “Get Backstage and really take control of your career and start booking.”

Advice from the trenches

Continuing to grow a career in a crowded, competitive market like Los Angeles means being relentless—and taking responsibility for your goals and your effort.

“Put yourself out there. Invest in yourself,” Crocker advised. “You can't sit back and expect to have things happen.”

Crocker added that forward momentum means seizing every opportunity to learn and evolve, harnessing the collective energy of the industry to propel oneself forward. "Do whatever you can to get on a professional set and meet others. Grow with those around you," he said.
