Doris Cochran’s dream of being in the spotlight was set in motion at a young age, but it wasn’t until she joined Backstage that her career really took off.
From her early years in theater to nearly booking a role on Roseanne, her passion never wavered. Today, Cochran’s journey—spanning reality TV, talk shows, and game shows—proves that with determination and the right tools, anything is possible.
Backstage breakthrough
For Cochran, Backstage wasn’t just a job platform, it was the key to reigniting her acting career six years ago after pausing it to be a mom.
“I was looking around for acting subscriptions, and when I came across Backstage I really loved what I saw,” she explained. “It had all the tools I needed and was also easy to navigate—from loading my profile pic and recordings to searching for jobs.”
Her first major opportunity came when she was cast on Dr. and the Diva, sharing her dating stories on national TV. This was just the beginning, leading to appearances on MTV Catfish, Judge Jerry Springer, People’s Court, and numerous other talk shows and several game shows. She has also landed minor and background roles in several films, series, and shorts.
“Backstage has changed my life,” she said, reflecting on the platform’s impact. “If you work hard enough and put in the time and hard work, you can seriously achieve your goals and dreams. Backstage has done that for me.”

Tips for new talent
Cochran's advice for new actors on Backstage is to make sure your profile is as complete as possible, adding that persistence and the power of putting yourself out there for as many roles as possible are key to increasing your chances of landing the perfect gig. “Apply, apply, apply! The more you apply the more responses you'll get and eventually something will fit.“
And she’ll keep using Backstage as long as it serves her. “I’ve been using Backstage for six years. What keeps me coming back is all the jobs I keep getting.”
Prepping like a pro
For Cochran, preparation is crucial to delivering standout auditions. Whether it’s readying her hair and makeup or making sure her home setup is ready for virtual callbacks, she approaches each opportunity with professionalism. She also stresses the importance of rehearsing until the lines feel natural. “It’s okay to read during the audition, but the more you memorize, the more you can connect with the camera.”
In the age of virtual auditions, Cochran’s routine has become more tech-based. “Get a good night’s rest, set up your tripod, and be ready to impress.”
Rolling with the punches
Not every role will go as planned, and that’s okay, Cochran advised. Even when you think you’ve nailed it, public perception might be different, she said. But rather than letting that derail her, she views it as part of the actor’s journey, constantly pushing herself forward.
Living in Northern Virginia, Cochran regularly books jobs from D.C. to New York and even Atlanta. Her advice for actors outside the major entertainment hubs? “Stay motivated and keep mentally strong!” She proves that no matter where you’re located, perseverance and a positive mindset can lead to big breaks.
Doris Cochran’s ability to jump from one project to the next—whether it’s a game show, reality TV, or film—showcases the power of staying ready and saying yes to opportunities. “Stay positive and keep applying to those gigs,” she said, because the role for you is out there.
