The Cinema Audio Society, which represents and celebrates the industry’s best sound artists, announced its 2022 award nominations on Jan. 25. The CAS Awards have been presented since 1994, and the film results are a notable precursor to the Academy Awards—especially its sound editing and mixing category.
The live-action motion picture category has recognized the sound mixers of five buzzy awards contenders: “Dune” (Warner Bros.), “No Time to Die” (United Artists Releasing), “Spider-Man: No Way Home” (Sony Pictures Entertainment), “The Power of the Dog” (Netflix), and “West Side Story” (20th Century Studios). Among the nominees in the television categories—limited series and TV movies, hourlong series, 30-minute series, and specials—are “WandaVision” (Disney+), “Mare of Easttown” (HBO), “Squid Game” (Netflix), “Succession” (HBO), “Only Murders in the Building” (Hulu), and “Ted Lasso” (Apple TV+).
“This year’s nominees display incredible skill and craftsmanship,” said CAS President Karol Urban in a statement. “We received submissions reflecting a myriad of narrative styles and technical approaches. The ingenuity and storytelling expertise of our sound mixing community is truly spectacular.”
The 58th CAS Awards will be presented live on March 19 in the Wilshire Grand Ballroom at the InterContinental Los Angeles Downtown, in a ceremony emceed by actor Kirsten Vangsness.
This year’s CAS Career Achievement Award recipient will be re-recording sound mixer Paul Massey. Ridley Scott will also be honored at the ceremony with the Cinema Audio Society Filmmaker Award. For more on CAS, visit its official website.
