“Clarice”
CBS is saying hello to a new Clarice. Rebecca Breeds (“The Originals,” “Pretty Little Liars”) has been cast as the lead in the upcoming “Silence of the Lambs” followup series pilot “Clarice.” Written and executive produced by Alex Kurtzman and Jenny Lumet, the series is set the year after the events of “The Silence of the Lambs” and follows Starling as she returns to the field to pursue serial murderers and sexual predators in the high-stakes Washington, D.C. political world. While it’s still in the pilot stage, “Clarice” has been given a big series commitment over at CBS, so expect to hear a lot more from CD April Webster soon.
“Dawn”
Victoria Mahoney made history last year as the first woman to direct a “Star Wars” film when she was the second unit director on “The Rise of Skywalker.” Now, she’ll continue building her sci-fi résumé, this time, over at Amazon. Mahoney is teaming up with acclaimed director Ava DuVernay to adapt Octavia E. Butler’s sci-fi novel “Dawn” for the small screen. The story follows a black woman who works with aliens to resurrect the human race 250 years after a nuclear war, and “Dawn” is the first part of a three-part series, leaving lots of potential for an extended project. Mahoney will direct the pilot and write the series with DuVernay producing via her Array banner. No casting has been announced, but DuVernay always uses Aisha Coley so her team could be a possibility.
“Janet”
Janet Mock and Ryan Murphy will continue to make history at Netflix with their latest project. The “Pose” duo have partnered up again for “Janet,” a film chronicling the true story of Washington Post journalist Janet Cooke. This will be Mock’s feature film debut, part of her major project deal she signed with Netflix last year, and will both helm the pic and co-write with former Washington Post editor Ned Martel. No casting team or cast has been announced at this point, but if Mock and Murphy are looking to stay consistent, we could see “Pose” CD Alexa L. Fogel come on board. You can read how Fogel built the history-making “Pose” cast here at Backstage!
“Turner & Hooch”
Over at Disney+, Lyndsy Fonseca and Carra Patterson have joined the cast as the female leads opposite Josh Peck in the upcoming platform reboot of “Turner & Hooch.” The series from “Burn Notice” creator Matt Nix already has a 12-episode order and, like the classic 1989 buddy-cop comedy film of the same name, will center on Scott Turner (Peck), now a U.S. marshal who inherits a big unruly dog that becomes the investigative partner he didn’t realize he needs. Fonseca will play Scott’s sister, Laura, and Patterson will play his partner, Jessica. Eric Souliere is casting.
“Uncharted”
Finally, announced Monday morning by Variety, Oscar nominee Antonio Banderas will be the latest actor to explore “Uncharted” territory, joining the cast of the upcoming big title over at Sony. Banderas’ role is unknown at the moment, but he will join Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg in the game adaptation, as well as the newly cast Sophia Ali and Tati Gabrielle, whose role details are being kept under wraps. Ruben Fletcher has also officially closed his deal to direct the feature after it was reported that the top choice for the job. Art Marcum and Matt Holloway have written the most recent draft of the script, and the film is set to be released in theaters on March 5, 2021.
