Reese Witherspoon Will Reprise Her Role in “Tracy Flick Can’t Win”
Reese Witherspoon will reportedly reprise her role of Tracy Flick in “Tracy Flick Can’t Win,” a sequel to “Election.”
In the political comedy, which was based on the 1998 novel of the same name by Tom Perrotta, Witherspoon starred as Tracy Flick opposite Matthew Broderick’s Jim McAllister.
The film received critical acclaim at the time and was nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay at the 72nd Academy Awards. While it lost to John Irving’s “The Cider House Rules,” it took home several other awards throughout its respective awards season, including Best Feature, Direction, and Screenplay at the Independent Spirit Awards.
“Tracy Flick Can’t Win,” based on Perrotta’s follow-up novel released earlier this year, will continue to follow Witherspoon in the titular role. Flick is now “the assistant principal at a public high school in suburban New Jersey, but she sets her sights on the top job as her boss announces plans to retire.”Other than Witherspoon, no further casting has been announced for the sequel, including whether Broderick will reprise his role.
Alexander Payne, who co-wrote and directed the original film, will return to both positions for the sequel, co-writing again with Jim Taylor.
Witherspoon will also produce the film under her Hello Sunshine banner, which has backed several successful projects in recent years since its formation, including “Big Little Lies,” “Where the Crawdads Sing,” and more.
Paramount+ will distribute the “Flick” flick, but a release date hasn’t been announced.
