SAG-AFTRA has announced that Oscar and SAG Award winner Helen Mirren is the next recipient of its annual distinction, the Life Achievement Award. In recognition of her impressive film and television career, as well as her humanitarian accomplishments, Mirren will be honored at the 28th SAG Awards on Feb. 27, 2022.
“I am honored to have been chosen to receive the SAG Life Achievement Award,” Mirren said. “Since I was a young actor starting out, I have always been inspired by and learned from American screen acting, so this award is particularly meaningful for me.”
With a résumé spanning film, TV, and theater, Mirren is best known for her award-winning turns as Queen Elizabeth II in “The Queen,” Jane Tennison on “Prime Suspect,” and her work in multiple “Fast & Furious” movies. Her roles in “Gosford Park” and “The Queen” and on TV’s “Elizabeth I” and “Phil Spector” have earned her four SAG Actor statues. Among Mirren’s philanthropic efforts are Meals on Wheels and the Stuttering Association for the Young in the U.S., and Freedom From Torture and Refuge in her native U.K.
Newly elected SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher said in a statement, “Dame Helen Mirren is quite simply a brilliant and luminous talent. Her work runs the gamut of characters, from a not-so-retired CIA superkiller and a ruthless Russian spy handler to a Hungarian cleaning lady and the most exquisite Elizabeth II. She has set the bar very high for all actors, and in role after role, she exceeds even her own extraordinary performances.”
SAG gives out the Life Achievement Award annually to an actor who fosters the “finest ideals of the acting profession.” Mirren will be its 57th recipient. For more on the awards, click here.
