Other than yelling “pick me, pick me!,” it’s hard to know how to make yourself seen and heard among all of your fellow actors also trying to get noticed. You must be mindful that you are the product—and producers, directors, studios, and casting agents are the buyers you are targeting. If you’re an actor who has a clearly defined brand, you are offering something unique to decision-makers. Stand tall in the knowledge that there is only one you in all the universe and follow these tips to make yourself sparkle like the star you want to be.

Be crystal clear about who you are

Are you an extrovert or an introvert? Is your name easy or difficult to pronounce? Are you a character or lead actor? Are you whimsical, sophisticated, or serious? Develop a business mindset, be unapologetic about being uniquely you, and become multifaceted while perfecting your craft. Like that old saying goes, “If you stay ready, you don’t have to get ready.”

Don’t overshare on social

Navigating the social media landscape can feel daunting. But in this digital branding world, it’s a necessity. Understand your target audience by building a strong online presence while being careful with your words. You want to be transparent, but you also need to be mindful of posting or sharing anything deemed controversial or offensive.

Don’t be afraid of TikTok

Livestreaming has become a popular tool for actors to connect with fans in real time. TikTok is beloved by influencers and actors alike for the simple fact that the content is short, concise, and repurposeful across multiple other social media platforms—allowing one piece of content to reach all of your audiences and apps. Users are provided with many choices of royalty-free music, templates, GIFs, and anything you can think of to assist in making your content swift and exciting in one fell swoop. As a podcaster, TikTok makes promoting my weekly episode a breeze.

You do you

Your brand needs to show what you’re capable of, so don’t just offer up an appetizer—offer the entire meal.

  • Switch up your wardrobe, hair color, eye color, or anything else that separates you from the masses.
  • Establish an original style, voice, and tone.
  • Create a memorable, recognizable logo that speaks to your individuality in terms of typography and imagery.
  • Create your own branding toolbox that includes:
    • Online digital footprint
    • Thumbnails
    • Avatar
    • Bio
    • Links to websites and social media platforms
    • Networking strategies, such as an accessible QR code business card armed with your contact and social info
  • Attend FYC events, symposiums, industry panels, and/or workshops—anything that can assist with staying locked and loaded toward the career and image you want and deserve.
