Whether the gritty streets of “The Dark Knight,” the suburbs of “Home Alone,” the L train system in “The Fugitive,” or countless moments on the “One Chicago” series, Chi-Town has long been a destination for prestige film and TV shows. Because so many projects shoot there, actors in Chicago have the unique opportunity to appear in small (but vital!) roles as background actors.
A background actor or extra is a non-speaking performer who fills in the storyworld of a film or TV show. Think of all the people you see on busy city streets, in hospitals, or on trains in the movies—they’re background actors.
It may sound like an easy gig, but this type of role can be very demanding. To be a successful background actor, you must be punctual, precise, and able to stand for long periods of time. You must be able to execute exactly what you’re told to do, sometimes over and over, and maintain your demeanor no matter the circumstance. It can be challenging work, but it can also be very rewarding, and it’s certainly an opportunity to learn everything there is to know about being on set.
Background actors are typically paid a daily rate—and if you do a good-enough job, you may be invited to be a featured extra, someone who performs something vital (if still non-speaking) for a scene.
1. Familiarize yourself with the local scene.
One of the quirks of background acting in Chicago is how quickly roles are filled. Having your email, phone, and Backstage notifications turned on—and responding immediately—is crucial.
2. Network with Chicagoans.
There’s a strong sense of camaraderie among Chicago extras. Many share tips and experiences on blogs and social media, helping newcomers navigate the process. While there’s plenty of work, it’s not always steady; some days you might spend hours on set and never appear on camera, while other days, you’ll find yourself front and center in a pivotal scene.
3. Seek representation.

5. Keep on keepin’ on.
As Lip Gallagher on “Shameless” (who is not a background part, but the Windy City wisdom still stands), Jeremy Allen White says, “Great things don’t happen in tiny little increments. They happen when someone thinks completely differently.” Breaking into the industry can be difficult, no matter your role type or location—but if you take that renowned Chicago go-getter attitude and apply it to your career, you may just find yourself becoming Chi-Town’s next big thing.
