Wondering what you missed in the past week’s news? Hulu’s “Washington Black,” which had already announced the involvement of Sterling K. Brown, has found its star in Ernest Kingsley, Jr. (“The Sandman,” “War of the Worlds 3”). Plus, HBO’s “Irma Vep” added eight to its cast, which will be led by Alicia Vikander. Here’s everything we know about these upcoming projects.
“Washington Black” has found its titular star.
First reported by Deadline, Ernest Kingsley Jr. will star in the Hulu project, which previously received a straight-to-series order at the streamer. As we have previously reported when the news of the project was announced, the nine-episode series based on the Esi Edugyan novel of the same name “follows the 19th-century adventures of George Washington ‘Wash’ Black, an 11-year-old boy on a Barbados sugar plantation, who must flee after a shocking death threatens to upend his life.” Kingsley will play “Wash,” joining the previously announced Sterling K. Brown and the newly announced Iola Evans, who will play Tanna Goff, “a young British woman of means “passing” as white but secretly born of a Melanesian mother on the Solomon Islands.” Selwyn Seyfu Hinds will write the adaptation and serve as executive producer with Brown executive producing under his Indian Meadows Productions banner. Kamala A. Thomas is the casting director.
“Irma Vep” gets eight new cast members.
Ahead of the holiday last week, HBO gave eight actors something to be thankful for! According to Variety, the upcoming “Irma Vep” has added eight cast members, including Vincent Macaigne, Jeanne Balibar, Lars Eidinger, Vincent Lacoste, Hippolyte Girardot, Alex Descas, Nora Hamzawi, and Antoine Reinartz. Alicia Vikander leads the cast, playing Mira, “an American movie star who travels to France to star in French filmmaker René Vidal’s remake of ‘Les Vampires.’ As tensions mount around the production, Mira begins to have difficulty distinguishing between her own identity and the character she plays in the film.” The new group of featured actors joins the cast that, in addition to Vikander, includes Adria Arjona, Carrie Brownstein, Byron Bowers, Tom Sturridge, Fala Chen, and Devon Ross. HBO and A24 will produce with Olivier Assayas serving as director, writer, and executive producer. Des Hamilton is the casting director.
