Wondering what you missed as 2021 wrapped? It’s been confirmed that Michael Keaton will reprise his turn as Batman in another upcoming project—this time for the “Batgirl” film starring Leslie Grace. Plus, Sam Mendes’ next feature film, “Empire of Light,” has announced a cast of U.K. actors, including Colin Firth, Toby Jones, and more. Here’s everything we know about these upcoming projects.
Michael Keaton returns to Gotham for the new “Batgirl” film
It’s night again in Gotham. According to Deadline, Michael Keaton will reprise his famous turn as the Caped Crusader in the upcoming Warner Bros. and DC feature “Batgirl.” As we previously reported, Leslie Grace will star as the titular hero in the film opposite Brendan Fraser, J.K. Simmons, and Jacob Scipio. This is the second project that will have Keaton back as Batman, following the announcement he would return for “The Flash” starring Ezra Miller, according to The Wrap. The actor debuted as Bruce Wayne, a.k.a Batman, in 1989’s “Batman,” following it up with “Batman Returns” in 1992. Plot details for the new project are currently being kept under wraps, other than that it centers on Barbara Gordon (Grace), Gotham City police commissioner Jim Gordon’s daughter. “Bad Boys for Life” team Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah are directing from a script by Christina Hodson (“Birds of Prey”). “Batgirl” will premiere on HBO Max in 2022. Kristy Carlson and Kate Ringsell are the casting directors.
“Empire of Light” gets an all-star cast
A Sam Mendes feature is never without an all-star cast, and the filmmaker’s next project, “Empire of Light,” is no exception. Joining the previously announced Olivia Colman and Michael Ward, Deadline reported that Colin Firth, Toby Jones, Crystal Clarke, and Tanya Moodie will also star in the upcoming Searchlight drama. Details of the project are being kept quiet for now, but Deadline reports that the film is being billed as “a love story set in and around a beautiful old cinema on the South Coast of England in the 1980s.” The “1917” director will helm the project from his own script—his first solo. A release date has yet to be set, but the film is expected out next fall.
