Don’t worry, BookTok fans: Taylor Jenkins Reid’s “The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo” is still getting an adaptation. Netflix is currently turning Reid’s 2017 romance into a movie. The project was first announced in March 2022 after the book gained popularity on TikTok in 2021. This will be the second screen adaptation of Reid’s work, following the hit Prime Video miniseries “Daisy Jones & The Six,” which starred Riley Keough and Sam Claflin.

However, since the project’s announcement, there has been little movement in its development cycle. But that doesn’t mean the movie is dead—just that it’s taking some time to come together. For those who want to stay on top of this upcoming adaptation, we’ve got you covered. Here’s the inside scoop on Netflix’s “The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo” film.

What is “The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo” about?

The story follows Evelyn Hugo, a 1950s movie star who has since become a recluse. At age 79, she opts to tell her life story to an amateur journalist, Monique Grant, who Evelyn has handpicked to write her biography. The book is divided into seven parts, one for each of Evelyn’s marriages she had while living in the spotlight of Hollywood’s Golden Age. As Evelyn recounts her rise to fame, she’s intent on revealing her secrets, including the truth of who she really loved during that time.

Who is developing Netflix’s “The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo” adaptation?

Liz Tigelaar (“Tiny Beautiful Things,” “Little Fires Everywhere,” “Life Unexpected”) is writing the script, and Leslye Headland (“Russian Doll,” “Sleeping With Other People”) will direct. Liza Chasin is executive producing the adaptation for 3Dot Productions, along with Brad Mendelsohn who is producing for Circle Management and Production. Reid and Margaret Chernin are also on board to executive produce the project for Netflix.

Prior to the streamer’s involvement, Freeform planned to adapt the novel into a miniseries in 2019, with “The L Word” co-creator Ilene Chaiken and star Jennifer Beals set as executive producers. Netflix has since picked up the project, and as of March 2023, Tigelaar has turned in a script that Reid is happy with for the film.
