JUMP TO

The 94th Academy Awards has finally arrived, celebrating the best films of 2021, from a Steven Spielberg musical to an IMAX-worthy sci-fi adaptation to a quiet Jane Campion Western. In the end, it was “CODA” that shone brightest, taking home all three of its major nominations—best supporting actor for Troy Kotsur, best adapted screenplay for Sian Heder, and best picture. Kotsur’s win marked the first for a deaf actor in the supporting category, and just the second-ever Oscar win for a deaf performer, following in the footsteps of his “CODA” co-star Marlee Matlin.

“I just wanted to say that this is dedicated to the deaf community, the CODA community, and the disabled community,” Kotsur said in his acceptance speech. “This is our moment. To my mom, my dad, and my brother, Mark: They’re not here today, but look at me now: I did it. I love you. Thank you.”

Despite Denis Villeneuve’s surprise exclusion from the best director race, “Dune” swept its way through the 94th Academy Awards. The sci-fi epic led the night overall with six wins, all of them craft categories—cinematography, editing, score, sound, production design, and visual effects.

Following an unscripted, show-stalling dust-up with presenter Chris Rock, Will Smith won the first Oscar of his career for his lead performance in “King Richard.” It was a night for first-time wins; both Jessica Chastain (best actress) and Ariana DeBose (best actress in a supporting role) also secured their first Academy gold for “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” and “West Side Story,” respectively.

“Even in this weary world that we live in, dreams do come true,” DeBose said in her acceptance speech. “To anybody who has ever questioned your identity…I promise you this: There is, indeed, a place for us.”

Here’s a full list of this year’s Oscar winners.
