Welcome to Rumorville! Here you can learn about casting news that’s about to break in Hollywood. These speculations might be only rumors, but that doesn’t mean you can’t follow the trail all the way to the audition room.
“Community” Movie
We got the six seasons, and now, we may finally be getting the movie. Speaking to Variety for its “Just For Variety” section, “Community” star Yvette Nicole Brown commented on the long-awaited movie for the canceled NBC series and the cast’s desire to do it. Says Brown, “I think it’s coming. I don’t know when, [but] I know we all want to do it and that’s half the battle.” Last year, most of the original cast and series creator Dan Harmon appeared in a table read and Q&A and all expressed interest in doing the film. The sitcom ran from 2009 to 2015, initially canceled by NBC after its fifth season and picked up by Yahoo! Screen for its sixth and final season. The in-joke “six seasons and a movie” became the “Community” community’s rallying cry, but it’s now been seven years since the film was announced to be in the early development stages. Along with Brown, the show starred Joel McHale, Gillian Jacobs, Danny Pudi, Alison Brie, Donald Glover, Ken Jeong, Jim Rash, and Chevy Chase. If we do finally see that film, keep an eye on original casting director Juel Bestrop.
“Poor Things”
First reported by Deadline, the Golden Globe-winning multihyphenate Ramy Youssef is in negotiations to join Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things.” Initially rumored, Emma Stone and William Dafoe will co-star in the upcoming adaptation of the Alasdair Gray novel that tells the story of Belle Baxter, a young woman brought back to life by an eccentric but brilliant scientist. (Youssef’s role has not been disclosed, and Dafoe’s has yet to be confirmed.) Tony McNamara, who wrote two other Stone-starrers, “Cruella” and “The Favourite,” will adapt the script with Lanthimos directing. A casting director has yet to be announced, but Lanthimos has most recently worked with Dixie Chassay on “The Favourite.”
“Renfield”
The upcoming monster horror flick “Renfield” may soon be led by a new director. Chris McKay (“The Lego Batman Movie” series, “Tomorrow War”) is reportedly in negotiations to direct and produce the Universal Pictures feature based on an original story outline from Robert Kirkman. Dexter Fletcher was originally confirmed to helm the feature but the role has since opened back up after he moved on to Paramount’s “The Saint” reboot. The upcoming monster movie, which follows the titular henchman to Dracula and asylum inmate, is part of Universal’s development slate of high-profile monster and horror flicks, kicked off by box office hit “The Invisible Man” and including the upcoming “Wolfman” starring Ryan Gosling, a “Van Helsing” pic, and more. According to Deadline, although plot details have yet to be announced, it’s believed to take place during the present day. Ryan Ridley wrote the script.
