One of television’s most iconic sci-fi series is officially gearing up for a new chapter. Hulu has greenlit the pilot for Ryan Coogler’s highly anticipated reboot of “The X-Files,” a project that first gained momentum in 2023 when original creator Chris Carter revealed Coogler’s vision for a more diverse iteration of the series.
Danielle Deadwyler is set to star as one of the two FBI agents anchoring the revival. Coogler is slated to write and direct the pilot, fresh off the historic success of his film “Sinners,” which recently shattered records with 16 Oscar nominations.
According to Deadline, this pilot order follows a dedicated three-year development process. Here is everything we know so far about the future of “The X-Files.”

While plot details remain under wraps, the official logline for “The X-Files” reboot confirms a fresh start: “Two highly decorated but vastly different FBI agents form an unlikely bond when they are assigned to a long-shuttered division devoted to cases involving unexplained phenomena.”
This new chapter follows in the footsteps of the 1990s cultural phenomenon that defined sci-fi television. The original series, which launched the careers of Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny, followed agents Dana Scully and Fox Mulder through nine seasons (1993–2002) of paranormal investigations and deep-state conspiracies. The franchise’s enduring legacy includes two feature films, “The X-Files” (1998) and “The X-Files: I Want to Believe” (2008), as well as a two-season revival between 2016 and 2018.
Jennifer Yale (“The Copenhagen Test,” “Your Friends & Neighbors”) is serving as showrunner and executive producer. She joins an executive producing team that includes Carter, Coogler, and Proximity Media partners Sev Ohanian and Zinzi Coogler. Simone Harris is serving as co-executive producer.
Oscar-nominated Francine Maisler (“Sinners,” “The Studio,” the “Dune” franchise) is handling casting for the pilot.
Deadline reports that Coogler accelerated development once he completed “Sinners.” The reboot comes from Onyx Collective and 20th Television and falls under Coogler’s overall television deal with Disney.
Deadwyler is currently the only confirmed cast member. Neither Anderson nor Duchovny has confirmed a return. According to Deadline, Coogler has spoken with Anderson about the project, but no returning cast members have been announced yet. More details are expected as production moves forward.
Additional announcements are expected as the pilot moves forward. Stay tuned for updates as they become available.
