Shortlists for the 2022 British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Film Awards have been announced in London.
Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi epic Dune leads the pack with 11 nominations, many in the technical categories. Following close behind is Jane Campion’s dark Western The Power of the Dog, with eight nominations, including for its director as well as star Benedict Cumberbatch. Homegrown favourite Sir Kenneth Branagh’s personal coming-of-age story Belfast earned six nods, but fellow British export James Bond didn’t do as well as expected. Daniel Craig’s final outing as Bond, No Time to Die, only got five BAFTA nods despite earning $131 million at the UK box office.
Overall, 48 films were recognised, from blockbusters to arthouse features. Winners will be selected by the BAFTA membership, which underwent a major diversity review in 2020.
The nominees for best film include Belfast, Don’t Look Up, Dune, Licorice Pizza, and The Power of the Dog. In the directing category, Jane Campion is recognised alongside Branagh, Paul Thomas Anderson (Licorice Pizza), Audrey Diwan (Happening), Ryûsuke Hamaguchi (Drive My Car), newbie Aleem Khan (After Love), and Julia Ducournau for her Palme d’Or–winning Titane. That’s an equal split between male and female directors, and Campion remains the favourite to take the win on the night. There was no recognition for Hollywood stalwart Steven Spielberg, although his reboot of West Side Story earned five nods overall.
As always, there were perceived snubs, with Olivia Colman (The Lost Daughter) and Kristen Stewart (Spencer) both missing out on best actress nominations. However, Lady Gaga was recognised for the first time in that category (for House of Gucci), joining Brits Joanna Scanlan (After Love) and Emilia Jones (CODA); Americans Tessa Thompson (Passing) and Alana Haim (Licorice Pizza); and Norwegian actor Renate Reinsve (The Worst Person in the World) in what is likely to be a competitive race.
Over in the best actor category, the announcement of frontrunners Will Smith (King Richard) and Benedict Cumberbatch came as no surprise. They’ll be up against first-time nominee Stephen Graham (Boiling Point), Mahershala Ali (Swan Song), Adeel Akhtar (Ali & Ava), and Leonardo DiCaprio (Don’t Look Up). However, there was no room for Denzel Washington’s performance in The Tragedy of Macbeth.
The 75th BAFTAs lauded and recognised plenty of new talent, with 19 out of 24 acting nominees being first-timers. All the supporting actor nominees are making their debuts on the shortlists, including Mike Faist (West Side Story), Ciarán Hinds (Belfast), Troy Kotsur (CODA), and Woody Norman (C’mon C’mon)—and that’s not to mention the no doubt friendly dog fight between The Power of the Dog co-stars Jesse Plemons and Kodi Smit-McPhee. Best supporting actress will also be hotly contested, with nominees including Caitríona Balfe (Belfast), Jessie Buckley (The Lost Daughter), Ariana DeBose (West Side Story), Ann Dowd (Mass), Aunjanue Ellis (King Richard), and Ruth Negga (Passing).
First-time feature director Aleem Khan’s drama After Love is also notable for its four nominations, including outstanding British film and best director for Khan. Meanwhile, nominees for the prestigious BAFTA Rising Star award, which were announced yesterday, include Smit-McPhee and DeBose, alongside Lashana Lynch (No Time to Die), Harris Dickinson (The King’s Man), and Millicent Simmonds (A Quiet Place Part II).
This year's BAFTA Film Awards are due to be held at the Royal Albert Hall on March 13, with Rebel Wilson serving as host.
