Another stepping stone on the path of awards season, the 2018 Critics’ Choice Award nominations were announced today in recognition of the year’s most critically acclaimed film and television. Presented by both the Broadcast Film Critics Association (BFCA, the largest film critics organization in the United States and Canada) and the Broadcast Television Journalists Association (BTJA), their critical darlings will be feted at the organizations’ 24th annual ceremony Jan. 13.

Yorgos Lanthimos’ “The Favourite,” from Fox Searchlight Pictures, netted the most total CCA nominations with 14. Stars Olivia Colman, Rachel Weisz, and Emma Stone scored individual as well as an ensemble nod. The darkly comic period piece is also up for five Golden Globe Awards, and made a record-breaking sweep of the 2018 British Independent Film Awards. Are SAG and Oscar nominations for Colman, Weisz, and Stone next?

“Black Panther,” the Disney and Marvel Studios megahit, followed “The Favourite” with 12 CCA nods, including for ensemble and supporting actor Michael B. Jordan. Universal Pictures’ “First Man” earned 10 nods, among them stars Ryan Gosling and Claire Foy. Tying for nine nods were Disney’s “Mary Poppins Returns” including titular lead Emily Blunt, Warner Brothers’ “A Star Is Born” including writer-director-star Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga, and Annapurna Pictures’ “Vice” including Christian Bale, Amy Adams, and Adam McKay’s ensemble. Adams also earned a nod for her work on HBO’s limited series “Sharp Objects,” repeating her double nominations at the Globes. Alfonso Cuarón received the most CCA nods of any individual (four!) for his semi-autobiographical Netflix epic “Roma,” which won eight nominations total, including for lead Yalitza Aparicio.

“The films of 2018 have been some of the most culturally impactful in recent history,” said BFCA President Joey Berlin in a statement. “They’ve portrayed stories from every walk of life, from all different perspectives, and have touched audiences and inspired conversations that we will continue to have for years to come.”

On the TV side, the BTJA singled out FX’s “The Americans” and “The Assassination Of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story”, and Showtime’s “Escape at Dannemora” with five nods each. “Sharp Objects” and Amazon Prime Video’s Emmy-dominating “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” earned four, the latter including actors Rachel Brosnahan, Alex Borstein, and Tony Shalhoub. Mirroring this year’s Emmy Awards, the networks notching the most total nominations were Netflix and HBO, each with 20.

“The extraordinary wealth of talent and growing number of platforms makes narrowing down each television category an unenviable task,” announced BTJA President Ed Martin. “Despite that, we are thrilled with this year’s nominees and look forward to recognizing their outstanding achievements.”

That recognition will take place at a gala Jan. 13, to be broadcasted on The CW. For more information and a full list of Critics’ Choice Award nominees, visit their site
