“Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2”
Issa Rae has signed on to voice Jessica Drew, a.k.a. Spider-Woman, in the sequel to Oscar-winning animated film “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.” Rae joins the returning voice cast that includes Shameik Moore and Hailee Steinfeld. As we previously reported, Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson will be directing the feature. The sequel to “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” is scheduled to open in theaters on Oct. 7, 2022. Mary Hidalgo returns as the film’s casting director.

“She Said”
In what is set to be one of the most highly-anticipated films for Hollywood insiders, Deadline broke the news on Monday that Carey Mulligan and Zoe Kazan will star in “She Said,” which follows the New York Times sexual harassment investigation against Harvey Weinstein that kicked off the #MeToo movement. Mulligan and Kazan are reportedly in their final negotiations for the Universal Pictures movie and will play Megan Twohey and Jodi Kantor, the authors of the book “She Said: Breaking the Sexual Harassment Story That Helped Ignite a Movement.” Maria Schrader (“Unorthodox”) is directing from a script by Rebecca Lenkiewicz (“Ida”). Annapurna Pictures and Plan B Entertainment will produce after they optioned the rights to the nonfiction book. Production is set to begin this summer.

“The Broken Earth”
In a seven-figure deal after a bidding war, Sony Pictures Entertainment has acquired the sci-fi book trilogy “The Broken Earth” by N.K. Jemisin to be adapted for the screen. The author will script the screen franchise herself. The multi-Hugo award-winning series is set on a futuristic Earth on a continent called the Stillness which experiences seasonal apocalyptic events. The deal was just announced so no director or casting director have been attached yet, but with a devoted fan base, the project should move along quickly.

“Babylon”
Damien Chazelle has found “Babylon,” or at least his cast for it. The writer-director has rounded out the cast of his upcoming 1920s Hollywood-set Paramount feature. Joining the previously announced Margot Robbie, Brad Pitt, Diego Calva, Jovan Adepo, Li Jun Li, and Katherine Waterston are Max Minghella, Flea, Samara Weaving, Rory Scovel, Lukas Haas, Eric Roberts, P.J. Byrne, and Damon Gupton. All parts and storylines for the feature are being kept under wraps, but the film is expected to be set in Hollywood when the motion picture industry turned from silent films to talkies. Chazelle will write and direct. “Babylon” is scheduled to hit theaters on Christmas Day 2022 in a limited release with a wide break on Jan. 6, 2023. Francine Maisler is the casting director.

“The Staircase”
A familiar face is returning to HBO. “Game of Thrones” star Sophie Turner has joined the upcoming HBO Max series “The Staircase.” Turner will star with the previously announced Toni Collette and Colin Firth in the limited series drama, which is based on the true-crime docuseries of the same name. The eight-episode project will follow Michael Peterson, who was convicted of murdering his wife Kathleen in 2001, a charge that was reduced to manslaughter in 2017 and saw Peterson freed. Collette will play Kathleen to Firth’s Michael in the series, and Turner will play Margaret Ratliff, one of Peterson’s adopted daughters. Juliette Binoche, Rosemarie DeWitt, and Parker Posey will also star. Douglas Aibel is casting the series, and casting is also taking place out of Atlanta, and production is set to start this month.

“Breathe”
Ahead of the release of the upcoming summer blockbuster “In the Heights,” star Melissa Barrera has signed onto her next project: the lead role in the upcoming Netflix drama series “Breathe.” First reported by Variety, the streamer ordered the project to series back in February. Barrera will star as Liv, “a razor-sharp Manhattan attorney who finds herself profoundly out of her comfort zone when her small plane crashes in the Canadian wilderness and she must battle for survival.” Netflix ordered six one-hour episodes of the series, which will be co-written and executive produced by Martin Gero and Brendan Gall. Warner Bros. Television will produce.

Florence Griffith Joyner Biopic
Tiffany Haddish is sprinting toward her next big project. The “Girls Trip” actor will reportedly produce and star in a biopic about three-time Olympic Gold-winning track and field athlete Florence Griffith Joyner, a.k.a. “Flo-Jo.” The untitled feature, produced by game1, will tell the story of “the Olympian’s remarkable life and untimely death, showcasing her historic feats but also her enduring impact on the entire world of sports and in the communities that needed her help and inspiration the most.” Haddish, who idolized Flo-Jo growing up, will star, and Al Joyner, Joyner’s widower, and former coach will serve as a producer and creative consultant on the project. According to Deadline, he has already begun training Haddish to prepare for the role. No further casting or creative team has been announced at this time.
