What is a Hallmark actor’s salary?

Hallmark Channel has become a content powerhouse, producing an extraordinary library of made-for-TV films each year. The brand’s streaming service Hallmark Movies Now releases a new movie every Sunday, ramping up production during the holiday season. In 2023 alone, Hallmark debuted 42 original Christmas movies, many of which star the same actors appearing in its other romance, mystery, and family-friendly films throughout the year.

SAG-AFTRA regulates how much actors are paid based on a film’s budget, the actor’s role, and how many days the actor is needed on set. Productions must pay union actors predetermined rates based on these factors, but can pay more to attract top talent.

A Hallmark actor’s salary is based on:

  • Film budget: Hallmark movies are considered low-budget films, meaning they aren’t financed by major studios and typically cost less than $5 million to make. SAG low-budget rates are 65% of basic theatrical rates.
  • Role: Background actors (or extras) earn less than those with lines, and even less than starring roles.
  • Filming time: Actor compensation depends on how many days they’re needed on set. Most Hallmark movies are free of complicated action and special effect scenes, meaning they can finish filming in about two to three weeks.

According to these guidelines, it’s estimated that the average Hallmark actor earns between $1,251 and $3,575 per week.

A Hallmark actor’s annual salary depends on how many movies they’re cast in—but with so many new releases on the company’s calendar, actors have a good shot at giving repeat performances.

How much do Hallmark movie actors make per movie?

Depending on their role, time on set, and call list placement, Hallmark actors can earn $5,600–$24,000 per movie. Leading roles played by bigger celebrities can bring in up to $65,000 per film for actors.

Most actors will only take home about 70% of that pay, though. Actors often partner with agents, managers, and assistants to help them secure auditions and shape their careers; in return, these professionals are compensated with up to 10% of each paycheck. Along with taxes, these payouts can result in less earnings per film.

Do Hallmark actors get royalties?

Royalties—also known as residuals—are payments made after a film or television show is rebroadcast or transitioned to a new medium after its initial release. These payments are in addition to an actor’s original paycheck but in much smaller increments. Royalty agreements are built into an actor’s contract and can be negotiated as long as they meet union minimums.

Just as with salaries, SAG dictates how and when royalties are paid.

  • Role: Actors must be in a leading role working under a SAG contract to be eligible for royalties. Background actors, or those without speaking parts, do not collect royalties.
  • Number of replays: Once a property moves past its original release, actors can start reaping the benefits of residuals. For TV, every time the movie or episode in question replays, the actor gets a payout, with the dollar amount decreasing per play until its 13th rerun, which bottoms out the rate for all future reruns.

Residuals get tricky when it comes to streaming platforms such as Hallmark Movies Now, where viewers can rewatch their favorite movie as many times as they want. Streaming revenue was one of the many reasons why SAG went on strike in 2023; terms detailing a streaming bonus fund aim to fill in some of the payment gap for views moving forward.

Many Hallmark actors are repeat players on the channel, especially the leading ladies. While most performers don’t build their résumés and bank accounts on feel-good Christmas movies alone, getting brought into the Hallmark fold offers a solid path for working actors.

Here are the top five richest Hallmark actors:

  • Candace Cameron Bure (net worth $14 million): First known for her childhood role as D.J. Tanner on the ’90s sitcom “Full House,” Bure later became a staple of the Hallmark oeuvre, starring in several holiday films and playing the title role in the popular “Aurora Teagarden Mysteries” movie franchise. However, in April 2022 she announced she was leaving the company for the more conservative channel Great American Family.
  • Marilu Henner (net worth $12 million): In her decades-long career, Henner earned five Golden Globe nominations for her role as Elaine Bardo on the comedy series “Taxi,” starring alongside Tony Danza and Danny DeVito. She has since co-starred with Bure in 18 “Aurora Teagarden” TV movies and a handful of other original Hallmark films.
  • Tamera Mowry-Housley (net worth $8 million): A child star who headlined the ’90s sitcom “Sister, Sister” with her twin, Tia, Mowry-Housley gained movie credits on the Disney Channel and on Lifetime before becoming a regular in romantic Hallmark films.
  • Alexa PenaVega (net worth $8 million): PenaVega cut her teeth in commercial work before landing a lead role in the “Spy Kids” movies. She’s now starred in several Hallmark films and the “Picture Perfect Mysteries” series.
  • Danica McKellar (net worth $6 million): McKellar has built her career in romance, first starring as the idyllic girl next door on “The Wonder Years.” She amassed an impressive collection of Christmas films with happily ever afters on Hallmark, but like Bure, McKellar left the channel after signing a deal with Great American Family.
