“American Hostage,” the MGM+ series based on the hit podcast, is set to begin production in Canada this fall. Emmy winner Jon Hamm (“Landman,” “The Morning Show”) stars as real-life radio host Fred Heckman, who becomes entangled in a tense hostage crisis. According to Variety, the series will be an anthology, with Shawn Ryan (“S.W.A.T.,” “The Night Agent”) and Eileen Myers (“Big Love”) serving as co-creators and executive producers. Few plot details have been released, but Deadline reports that “American Hostage” is set in 1977 Indianapolis and dramatizes the true story of Tony Kiritsis, who held a mortgage executive hostage at gunpoint. When Kiritsis called a local radio station, veteran broadcaster Fred Heckman answered, launching a 63-hour standoff that played out over live media coverage.
The eight-episode drama is expected to stream on MGM+ in 2026.
