Like “Ted Lasso,” Apple TV+’s “Stick” channels its feel-good forefather to bring a new lighthearted sports comedy to life. (In this case, that sport is golf.) Starring Owen Wilson (“Wedding Crashers,” “Cars”), “Stick” drops its first three episodes on June 4, but it’s already garnering comparisons to its predecessor.

Created by Jason Keller, “Stick” follows Pryce Cahill (Wilson), a former professional golfer whose career ended abruptly 20 years prior. Now, with his marriage collapsing and his job at a sporting goods store in the rearview, Pryce finds himself coaching retirees to pass the time (and pay the bills). One day, while on the course, he encounters a teenage boy, Santi (Peter Dager), who sneaks in to aggressively hit some balls around the green. Despite Santi’s obvious rage, the washed-up pro offers to coach the boy, knowing Santi has the makings of a prodigy. With Pryce’s former caddy and Santi’s mother in tow, the mentor and his protégé seek out tournaments, finding glory and fortune (plus friendship) along the way.
The cast of “Stick” Season 1 includes:
- Owen Wilson as Pryce “Stick” Cahill
- Peter Dager as Santi Wheeler
- Mariana Treviño as Elena
- Marc Maron as Mitts
- Judy Greer as Amber-Linn
- Timothy Olyphant as Clark Ross
- Lilli Kay as Zero
- Ryan Kiera Armstrong as Angela
For Wilson, golf was somewhat of a mystery, so he studied hard to become a “natural” of sorts. “[W]ith this one, maybe because my dad played, and I know friends that are really good, I felt more of a responsibility, a pressure, or almost anxiety that I wanted to, hopefully, make it as convincing as possible,” Wilson shared with Yardbarker. “That’s probably why I started taking all the lessons, and you know, just to also soak up some of the jargon. And so, I think kind of getting to where I felt comfortable enough to be able to talk about golf in a way that felt real to me, I was happy with that.”

Rachel Tenner (“Fargo,” “Maid”) of Rachel Tenner Casting served as the primary CD on “Stick” Season 1. An Emmy winner herself, Tenner also cast Apple TV+’s “Severance,” which earned multiple acting nominations at the 2022 Primetime Emmys, so it may be wise to take her advice when she explains how actors can stand out in the audition room.
