On March 2, the 97th Academy Awards ceremony, hosted by Conan O'Brien, honored the most outstanding films, performances, and creative and technical work of 2024.
Sean Baker's "Anora" was the night's big winner. In addition to the coveted title of best picture, the romantic dramedy won best actress for lead Mikey Madison, director and original screenplay for Baker, and editing.
“I just want to recognize and honor the sex worker community. I will continue to support and be an ally. All of the incredible people, the women that I’ve had the privilege of meeting from that community has been one of the highlights of this incredible experience," Madison said in her acceptance speech, adding: "I also just want to recognize the thoughtful, intelligent, beautiful, breathtaking work of my fellow nominees. I’m honored to be recognized alongside all of you. This is a dream come true.”
Falling in Love With Mikey Madison Kieran Culkin kicked off the awards-giving portion of the evening with a win in best supporting actor for Jesse Eisenberg's "A Real Pain." Zoe Saldaña took home her first Oscar in the supporting actress category for Jacques Audiard's "Emilia Pérez," while Adrien Brody claimed his second lead actor Academy Award for Brady Corbet's "The Brutalist."
"I'm here once again to represent the lingering traumas and the repercussions of war, and systematic oppression and of antisemitism and racism and of othering," Brody said on stage, referencing his 2002 win for "The Pianist." "I pray for a healthier and a happier and a more inclusive world, and I believe if the past can teach us anything, it's a reminder to not let hate go unchecked."
