Get the midnight margaritas ready because the long-awaited “Practical Magic” sequel is officially brewing. In a teaser trailer shared on social media by Warner Bros., the studio confirmed that “Practical Magic 2” is set to hit theaters on September 18, 2026. News of the sequel, which comes nearly 30 years after the original movie premiered in 1998, has already left fans feeling enchanted. This isn’t the first attempt to revive the cult-favorite tale either, as Warner Bros. had hoped to expand the franchise in 2019 with a prequel series, titled “Rules of Magic,” but it was ultimately scrapped. Now that “Practical Magic 2” is finally close to production, here’s everything we know about the project, including returning cast members and crew.

What is “Practical Magic 2” about?

Specific details about the plot of “Practical Magic 2” haven’t been released, but the film will likely be a follow-up to the original story. In 2024, People confirmed that Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman would reprise their roles as Sally and Gillian Owens, respectively. However, it’s unclear if the sequel will center on their stories or pivot to other characters.

“Practical Magic” is based on the 1995 novel of the same name by Alice Hoffman. The story follows two sisters, Sally and Gillian, who are descended from a long line of witches. As they learn to deal with the ups and downs of their magical powers, they must also figure out how to break an old family curse, which kills any man they fall in love with.

Who is developing “Practical Magic 2”?

Susanne Bier (“The Undoing,” “Bird Box”) will direct the movie for Warner Bros. The screenplay is co-written by Akiva Goldsman (“The Da Vinci Code,” “A Beautiful Mind”), who also worked on the 1998 script, and Georgia Pritchett (“Succession,” “Veep”). Griffin Dunne (“This Is Us”) is an executive producer, with Bullock, Kidman, and Denise Di Novi (“Little Women”) joining as producers.

Di Novi, who also produced the 1998 film, told People that she aims to honor the spirit of the original movie. “I think the big mistake people make with sequels is when they kind of want to reinvent the wheel and be totally original and surprise people,” she said.

Who is in the cast of “Practical Magic 2”?

Although the sequel is currently set to begin production this summer, there haven’t been many official casting announcements for the project. Most notably, Bullock and Kidman will reprise their lead roles as the Owens sisters. At this time, Joey King (“We Were the Lucky Ones”) is the only other confirmed actor, though we expect to hear more in the coming months. King is set to play Bullock’s character’s daughter, who discovers the family’s secrets. It’s not yet known if either magical aunts, played by Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest, will return.

The full cast of “Practical Magic” included Bullock, Kidman, Channing, Wiest, Mark Feuerstein, Aidan Quinn, Goran Visnjic, Margo Martindale, Evan Rachel Wood, Camilla Belle, Caprice Benedetti, Lora Anne Criswell, Chloe Webb, Martha Gehman, Lucinda Jenney, and Cordelia Richards.
