Get the midnight margaritas ready because the long-awaited “Practical Magic” sequel is officially brewing! “Practical Magic 2” hits theaters on Sept. 11, 2026. In June 2026, the official “Practical Magic 2” trailer dropped, offering a glimpse into the mystical mess the Owens women have gotten themselves into this time.
News of the sequel, which comes nearly 30 years after the original movie premiered in 1998, has already left fans feeling enchanted. But this isn’t the first attempt to revive the cult-favorite tale. Warner Bros. had hoped to expand the franchise in 2019 with a prequel series, titled “Rules of Magic,” but it was ultimately scrapped. Now, as “Practical Magic 2” nears its debut, here’s everything we know about the film, including new additions, returning cast members, and the crew that makes the real magic happen.

Based on author Alice Hoffman’s 2021 novel, “The Book of Magic,” the sequel continues 25 years after the events of the original film. “Practical Magic 2” follows the notorious Owens women—aunts Frances (Stockard Channing) and Jet (Dianne Wiest), sisters Sally (Sandra Bullock) and Gillian (Nicole Kidman), and Sally’s daughters, Kylie (Joey King) and Antonia (Maisie Williams)—as the family’s sordid origin story comes to light. While it’s no secret that the Owens are cursed when it comes to love (the men in their lives succumb to an untimely demise), Kylie begins digging into the family’s past in an effort to halt this deadly legacy once and for all. However, in learning about her lineage, Kylie finds herself walking down a dark path. Sally and Gillian must travel to England to face the true source of the family’s magical powers and save Kylie from a fate potentially worse than any the deathwatch beetle ever wrought.
Susanne Bier (“The Undoing,” “Bird Box”) directed the film for Warner Bros. The screenplay was co-written by Akiva Goldsman (“The Da Vinci Code,” “A Beautiful Mind”), who also worked on the original 1998 script, and Georgia Pritchett (“Succession,” “Veep”). Griffin Dunne (“This Is Us”), director of the first film, served as an executive producer, with Bullock, Kidman, and Denise Di Novi (“Little Women”) joining as producers.
Di Novi, who also produced the ‘98 film, assured People the team aimed to capture the spirit of the original movie. “I think the big mistake people make with sequels is when they kind of want to reinvent the wheel and be totally original and surprise people,” she said, adding that they "[get] how important the first movie is to so many people, women in particular, and we want to honor that for sure."
“Practical Magic 2” stars a mix of returning favorites and franchise newcomers, including:

Jina Jay (“Bird Box,” “Black Mirror”) served as the primary casting director on “Practical Magic 2.” Cathy Sandrich Gelfond and Amanda Mackey (“While You Were Sleeping,” “The Proposal”) cast the original film. (From the looks of things, we’d say they’re all big Bullock fans!)
“Practical Magic 2” will soon be in theaters, but we would not be surprised if its success spawns additional movies, especially now that a new generation of Owens women—King and Williams—has joined the ranks.
