Netflix has officially greenlit a sequel to its record-breaking animated phenomenon “KPop Demon Hunters.”

The 2025 breakout didn’t just entertain—it made history. With over 500 million views, it stands as Netflix’s most-watched title ever. Its cultural impact was equally massive in the music world, where the film’s group, HUNTR/X, became the first K-pop girl group to hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The anthem “Golden” also became the first K-pop track to win a Grammy (for best song written for visual media).

Adding to its historic run, the film dominated the awards circuit by winning the Oscar for best animated feature, while “Golden” secured the Academy Award for best original song.

Directors Maggie Kang (“The Lego Ninjago Movie”) and Chris Appelhans (“Wish Dragon”) are returning to lead the sequel, which serves as the flagship project for their new, exclusive multiyear deal with Netflix Animation.

What is “KPop Demon Hunters” about?

The original film follows superstar girl group members Rumi (Arden Cho), Zoey (Ji-young Yoo), and Mira (May Hong), who sell out arenas by day and secretly hunt demons by night. Set in the high-energy world of K-pop, the story blends vibrant animation with fantasy, girl-power themes, and a pulsing soundtrack. A sequel would likely expand the trio’s backstories and raise the stakes in their battle against evil.

Who is developing the “KPop Demon Hunters” sequel?

Sony Pictures Animation produced the original film and partnered with Netflix for distribution. Both studios are on board for the sequel.

In announcing the sequel, Kang said, “There’s so much more to this world we have built, and I’m excited to show you. This is only the beginning.” Appelhans added that he and Kang are excited to “write [the characters’] next chapter, challenge them, and watch them evolve.”
