Few series in TV history have shaken up the landscape like “Game of Thrones,” which over eight seasons took home 59 Emmy Awards, the most by a drama series. Adapted from George R.R. Martin’s “A Song of Ice and Fire,” the fantasy drama starred Kit Harington, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Emilia Clarke, Lena Headey, Sophie Turner, Maisie Williams, Peter Dinklage, and more in their conflicts and quest for the Iron Throne.
Even its prequel series, “House of the Dragon,” which is set nearly 200 years before the events of “Thrones” and tracks the reign of House Targaryen, is an ongoing success. It also doesn’t stop there, as HBO is preparing another spinoff, “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.” The new series will be yet another prequel to the original “Game of Thrones,” based on Martin’s “Tales of Dunk and Egg” novellas.
It's clear there’s no shortage of TV series in the works for the “Game of Thrones” franchise, but what about the big screen? On Oct. 31, fans received exciting news about a possible “Game of Thrones” movie adaptation. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. is quietly developing at least one “Game of Thrones” movie set in Westeros.
The project (or projects) are reportedly only very early in development, with no director, writer(s), or cast attached at this time. But THR’s sources imply that the studio is committed to bringing Martin’s universe to the big screen, a change of direction from its previous plans to keep “Thrones” as a series-focused franchise. In addition to “House of the Dragon” and “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,” HBO has put into development (and pulled) several “Thrones” series since the parent series’ debut, including “10,000 Ships,” “Bloodmoon,” a Jon Snow–centered series, and other live-action and animated projects. Therefore, fans of the franchise are wary about the “Thrones” adaptation even making it to theaters.
While Warner Bros. has refused to comment on the news, HBO has confirmed it. At a press event on Nov. 12, HBO and Max CEO Casey Bloys confirmed that Warner Bros. is developing a possible “Game of Thrones” film with Martin involved. “We’ll read the scripts along with them. I think it could be fun and interesting. I mean, that’s the point of development, you see is there a story that’s worthy of being in theaters and a big spectacle? I think it would be fun.”
We still have a ways to go before we hear about any casting announcements for the planned “Game of Thrones” film(s). However, there are other ways to get involved in the expanding “Thrones” cinematic universe and other big-name fantasy projects.
