The surrealist comedy “Government Cheese” is all about second chances—or at least it is for ex-con Hampton Chambers, who, after his release from prison, tries his best to reintegrate into his family’s life. Set in the San Fernando Valley in 1969, the show stars David Oyelowo (who’s also an executive producer). The first four episodes debut April 16 on Apple TV+.

What is “Government Cheese” about?

According to Deadline, the ’60s-era Chambers family is “beautifully unfettered from the realities of the world.” When their patriarch, Hampton (Oyelowo), returns home after a stay in prison, his wife, Astoria (Simone Missick), and their two sons, Einstein (Evan Ellison) and Harrison (Jahi Di’Allo Winston), have their world thrown into chaos. People from Hampton’s past, along with moments of seemingly divine intervention, pop up as he tries to sell a drill he invented in prison (it self-sharpens while it works!) rather than return to the life of crime he knew before.
