“Peacemaker” debuted in January 2022 as a spinoff of Gunn’s 2021 film “The Suicide Squad.” Season 1 follows Christopher Smith (Cena), aka Peacemaker, as he unwillingly joins the fictional government agency A.R.G.U.S. and its covert Project Butterfly. His mission: track down and eliminate parasitic butterfly-like creatures hiding inside human hosts.
“Peacemaker” Season 2, premiering Aug. 21, 2025, will serve as a “soft reboot” of the series. While Season 1 featured a Justice League cameo from Zack Snyder’s DC Extended Universe, the new installment won’t treat that as canon. Instead, the second season will pick up after the events of Gunn’s upcoming “Superman,” which hits theaters July 11. “Superman” launches the new DC Universe (DCU), which follows a different storyline than the earlier Snyder-led DCEU.
John Papsidera is the casting director for Max’s “Peacemaker.” With more than 200 credits to his name—including blockbuster films like Gunn’s “Superman” and Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey,” and hit series like Taylor Sheridan’s “Yellowstone” franchise and Shawn Ryan’s “The Night Agent”—Papsidera brings a wealth of experience to the table. He’s also a two-time Emmy winner with five additional casting nominations.
“We really respect actors, and we want them to be able to feel like when they walk into the audition room, they have the freedom to do the best work they can,” says Papsidera. Read more of his insights about auditions in this interview.
