Nearly 50 years after director Brian De Palma brought Stephen King’s 1974 novel “Carrie” to theaters, horror aficionado Mike Flanagan is adapting the story for modern audiences courtesy of Amazon MGM Studios. With numerous horror adaptations under his belt—including the hit miniseries “The Haunting of Hill House” and “The Fall of the House of Usher”—Flanagan will write and executive produce the new series, as well as act as showrunner. Intrepid Picture’s Trevor Macy will also serve as executive producer.
This isn’t Flanagan’s first adaptation of King’s work; he directed 2019’s “Doctor Sleep” (King’s follow-up to “The Shining”), 2017’s “Gerald’s Game,” and, most recently, 2024’s “The Life of Chuck.” And while there are no actors attached to the show at the moment, we wouldn’t be surprised if Flanagan’s frequent collaborators, Carla Gugino and Henry Thomas, show up on the cast list.

King’s novel follows teenager Carrie White as she struggles to control the supernatural power she holds. Bullied as an outsider during the school day, Carrie must also endure her religious mother’s wrath as she repeatedly scolds her daughter for the hypothetical sins that come with burgeoning womanhood. However, Carrie’s experience differs from the girls in her class due to her telekinetic powers. In the novel—and subsequent 1976 film—Carrie ultimately uses her powers to exact revenge against her tormentors, culminating in her memorable murderous rampage.
Flanagan’s series will surely expand on the events leading up to that fateful prom night. As the showrunner noted, updating “Carrie” for a modern audience means integrating technology’s impact on today’s teenage experience, among other details, adding new layers to a story that many fans consider the greatest horror film in cinematic history.

The series remains in the earliest stages of development, so there is no casting director attached to the project just yet. But Flanagan has repeatedly worked with Anne McCarthy and Kellie Roy of Engine Casting on many of his previous series, including “Midnight Mass,” “The Fall of the House of Usher,” “The Haunting of Hill House,” and “The Haunting of Bly Manor.”
