What is Instagram Collabs?

Instagram Collabs is a feature that allows two accounts to co-author a single post or Reel. That post then appears on both users’ profiles and is shown to both sets of followers.

Here’s how it works in practice:

  • A user creates a post and invites another account to be listed as a collaborator.
  • Once the collaborator accepts, the post appears on both accounts with both usernames in the header.
  • Likes, views, and comments are shared across both audiences.

Unlike traditional influencer tags or partnerships in which one party shouts out another, Instagram Collabs create a seamless, co-branded piece of content. It’s visually clear that both accounts are involved, which boosts trust and visibility.

Of course, collaboration can mean coordinated campaigns, influencer or brand partnerships, product co-launches, and live broadcasts. But the Collab feature is a standout for its simplicity and mutual visibility.

Why collaborate on Instagram?

“But I hate sharing credit,” you say, “I want to hoard all the credit for myself.” A Collab on Instagram isn’t just a selfless act—it comes with a lot of perks for anyone who wants to become an influencer.

  • Mutual growth: At its core, collaboration is about expanding your reach. When you collaborate with another account, especially one that aligns with your niche or values, you get direct exposure to their audience, and vice versa. A well-matched collaboration creates a win-win situation where both parties gain visibility.
  • Increased engagement: Instagram’s algorithm favors content that generates interactions quickly. Because Collab posts are shared to two audiences simultaneously, they often receive higher initial engagement (likes, shares, and comments), which can boost their chances of landing on the Explore page or gaining traction in the feed. Insta fame awaits!
  • Creative freshness: Collaborating often pushes you out of your usual content comfort zone. Whether it’s trying a new style, experimenting with video formats, or co-hosting a Q&A, these posts often bring new energy and creativity to your feed.
  • Social proof and credibility: When a content creator who is well-regarded in your niche collaborates with you, it signals to their audience that you’re someone worth knowing. This form of social proof can enhance your reputation, increase trust with new followers, and position you as a valuable contributor in your space. Remember, you can work with a person or a brand.
  • Sales and conversions: For brands, especially in e-commerce, collaborations can directly impact sales. Influencer partnerships or product collabs often lead to more targeted traffic and higher conversion rates because the audience sees the product being endorsed by someone they already trust.

Collaborating is pretty easy, but following these key steps will help ensure your partnership is successful, both technically and strategically.

How to create a Collab post

Want to make and post your own Instagram Collabs? Here’s how.

1. Create a new post or Reel. Start by creating your content just as you normally would. Whether it’s a photo, carousel, or Reel, you’ll go through the usual process of uploading and editing your post.

2. Tap on “Tag People.” On the screen where you add your caption and location, tap “Tag People.”

3. Choose “Invite Collaborator.” Under the tagging options, you’ll see “Invite Collaborator.” Tap it and search for the username of the account you want to collaborate with.

4. Select the account. Once you find the right account, tap their name. This sends them an invitation to co-author the post.

5. Share the post. After adding the collaborator, go ahead and publish the post. At this point, it will only appear on your feed—but with a pending invite for the collaborator.

6. Wait for acceptance. Once the other user accepts your collaboration request, the post will automatically be updated to appear on their profile as well. All engagement will then be shared across both profiles.

How to accept an Instagram Collab

If someone sends you a Collab invitation, follow these steps to accept it and make the post appear on your feed.

1. Check your notifications. You’ll receive a notification when someone invites you to collaborate on a post. It will appear in your activity feed, just like a mention or a tag.

2. Tap on the notification. This will bring you to the post that you’ve been invited to co-author.

3. Hit “Review.” On the post’s preview screen, click on the option to “Review” the collaboration invite.

4. Accept or decline. After reviewing the content and confirming you want to participate, tap “Accept.” The post will now be live on both your profile and the original poster’s feed. If you don’t want to be part of it, you can tap “Decline.”

5. Engage with the post. Once it’s live, comment, share, and engage! This helps boost performance and shows your followers you’re actively part of the Collab.

Tips for a successful Collab post

Not all Collabs are made equal—here are some tips to ensure you get the most out of yours.

  • Choose the right partner. Pick someone whose audience aligns with yours (but isn’t going to be a complete overlap). Relevance is more important than follower count.
  • Plan content together. Discuss and strategize beforehand to ensure mutual value, with a particular focus on how your partnership can create synergy.
  • Agree on goals. Are you looking to grow followers, promote a product, drive traffic, or just let your hair down and make lasting memories with your friend? Make sure you both know the purpose.
  • Respect aesthetic and tone. Try to create content that fits naturally with both of your brands.

If you want to become a successful Instagram influencer (and even make money on the platform), Collabs are a great tool to have in your kit. They increase your reach, and if you’re lucky, can catapult you onto a much larger stage.
