Jinkies! Scooby-Doo, the beloved Great Dane, and his human friends Shaggy, Velma, Daphne, and Fred are coming back to the small screen. On March 26, Netflix announced that an eight-episode live-action “Scooby-Doo” series is officially in the works. The new show, which is based on characters created by animation studio Hanna-Barbera, is being spearheaded by showrunners Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg and will feature an all-new story about the mystery-solving gang.
According to Peter Friedlander, vice president of scripted series at Netflix, everyone involved in the series is “committed to delighting longtime fans and opening up a world of groovy adventures for a new era of meddling kids.” For more inside scoop on this exciting new project, here’s everything we know about Netflix’s “Scooby-Doo” series.

According to the streamer’s press release, the new series is an origin story of how the four friends and their beloved dog became the iconic mystery-solvers we now know and love. “Scooby-Doo” follows Shaggy and Daphne, who are enjoying their final summer at camp. The duo, however, get pulled into a freaky mystery when they meet a Great Dane puppy that may have seen a paranormal killing. Along with the scientifically minded townie Velma and the handsome but odd new kid Fred, the group of teens sets out to solve the case even as it threatens to reveal all the skeletons in their closets.
Showrunners, writers, and executive producers Appelbaum and Rosenberg are the primary creators attached to the reboot at this time. Previously, they’ve developed and executive-produced series like “Zoo,” “Life on Mars,” and “October Road.” In addition, industry heavyweights Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Leigh London Redman, André Nemec, and Jeff Pinkner are executive-producing. “Josh and Scott and everyone at Midnight Radio have crafted a story that captures [Bill Hanna and Joe Barbera’s] amazing spirits and their genius creation,” Berlanti said in Netflix’s press release, offering a boost of confidence to the project.
While casting hasn’t started on the “Scooby-Doo” series, it hasn’t stopped fan speculation on who should portray the beloved characters. Entertainment Weekly suggested a slew of different stars it’d want to see in the ensemble, including Tim Robinson as Scooby-Doo, Fred Hechinger as Shaggy, Geraldine Viswanathan as Velma, Patrick Schwarzenegger as Fred, Madelaine Petsch as Daphne, and even Robert Pattinson as Scrappy-Doo.
This also won’t be the first time we’ve seen the animated characters come to life. Matthew Lillard, Freddie Prinze Jr., Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Linda Cardellini played the gang, with Neil Fanning as Scooby, in the 2002 film “Scooby-Doo.”
As mentioned, the “Scooby-Doo” series is still in the early stages of development, which means casting information isn’t available just yet.
