Originally developed by Maxis and published by EA, “The Sims” is a life simulator video game. Users create virtual avatars known as Sims, then customize and control their playable people, overseeing their day-to-day routines (and all that life has in store).
Though the franchise started in 1989 with “SimCity,” it wasn’t until 2000’s “The Sims” that the game took over the market. According to EA, the series has seen over 500 million players in nearly 25 years, thanks to its three sequels and dozens of expansion packs, spinoff series, and console and non-PC platform games.
In September 2024, EA confirmed that a “Sims” movie is officially underway at Amazon MGM Studios. Vertigo Entertainment, the team behind 2014’s “The Lego Movie,” is working with Margot Robbie, Tom Ackerley, Josey McNamara, and Sophia Kerr’s LuckyChap Entertainment producing banner, which brought Greta Gerwig’s mega-hit “Barbie” to life.
“Loki” Season 1 director Kate Herron will helm the feature (marking her feature directorial debut), as well as co-write the script with Briony Redman (“Doctor Who”); both will executive produce.
EA’s vice president and general manager of “The Sims” franchise Kate Gorman promises that “a lot of lore” will make it into the movie, hoping to create a big-screen experience with “Barbie”-sized impact that is “very much rooted in ‘The Sims’ universe” and deserving of the love and nostalgia fans carry for the franchise.
“We want this to be an experience that reflects all that amazing history and play of so many people in this world, but also is something that you can share across generations and to be part of pop culture and culturally relevant,” Gorman said.
She added, “That’s what we really want to deliver on, is just an authentic ‘Sims’ experience, and really have the most expansive ‘Sims’ offering we’ve ever had to bring that delight and share the experience of playing ‘The Sims’ with so many people or their friends or families who may not have actually played ‘The Sims,’ but you can help tell that story through watching a [movie] about ‘The Sims’ universe.”
As for plot details, the most EA has offered so far has been some of the Easter eggs that will make it into the big-screen project, including Freezer Bunnies and potentially some pools with missing ladders. Gorman also spoke to Variety about a social media campaign to get the film made in its in-universe Simlish language and include subtitles, calling the concept “fun” and “a great idea,” adding, “It’s something we’ll definitely talk about.”
Any other details, including an official title, a release date, or a cast have yet to be announced. (Will Bella Goth return at last?!) EA promises updates next year as “The Sims” marks its 25th birthday on Feb. 4, 2025.
Though the “Sims” adaptation has found a home with Amazon MGM Studios, the project is still early in its development process and is not casting at this time.
