Sam Mendes’ New Movie Starring Olivia Colman + More UK Greenlit

The following projects are now visible on the horizon, whether in development or actively casting. Keep these leads on your radar and your eyes open for the opportunity to land an audition.

Empire of Light
Sam Mendes’ latest film is set to be a departure from the action of 1917 and Spectre, with the acclaimed director taking on a tale of romance set in the 1980s, in and around an old cinema. Olivia Colman stars, along with Micheal Ward (Top Boy, Blue Story) and filming is set for early 2022 (with the seaside town of Margate reportedly a key location). It marks the first solo original screenplay Mendes has written, and is produced by his company Neal Street Productions. It’s very likely that regular collaborator Nina Gold is attached to cast. 

All the Light We Cannot See
Netflix’s big budget World War Two series is getting ready to shoot. Telling the story of Marie-Laure, a blind French teenager, and her relationship with a German soldier, the project now has Aria Mia Loberti attached to play the lead. Written by Steven Knight (Locke), the script is based on the novel of the same name by Anthony Doerr. Stranger Things director Shawn Levy on board. Casting is by Lucy Bevan along with Emily Brockmann and Katie Brydon as associates and Susanne Scheel for additional casting. 

Whitstable Pearl
The second series of Acorn TV’s adaptation of Julie Wassmer’s crime novels is gearing up to shoot, now with a confirmed start date. Kerry Godliman returns as private detective Pearl Nolan, who rises to the challenge of tackling more than missing dogs. Shooting is set to begin on 21 February 2022 and casting director Rob Kelly is attached.
